30-30 to .308 difference?

"Just the right amount" of power beats "too much" power in my book.

My book tells me that, too ......

And the older I get, the less powerfull the "ideal deer cartridge" in that book becomes.....

I'm beginning to think that any impact velocity over 2800 f/sec, even with a tiny, solid bullet will do more damage to the meat than I want to have to deal with....

Axis II is a good option. In that price range consider a river American also.

In regards to 308, it's never a bad choice. You can shoot light bullets for coyotes and heavy bullets for animal or long range target. It is definitely a step up from your 3030.

Having said that, its rarely the best choice. You can get more power from a magnum. You can get flatter trajectory for varmint from 243. You can get better ballistics for target shooting with a 260 rem.

The point is if you think you will buy this one rifle and that's it, then you are right on track. If you think buying multiple rifles in the future is likely then consider buying calibers that are better at specific tasks.

As noted the 12FV and the 10T are Cabelas only offerings.

All the good savage stuff but the stock on the 12FV is entry level (which is ok with me so far. $380 for the 12FV and just under 400 for the 10T (on sale, $40 off I think)

If you want to punch holes in paper then the Heavy Barrel on the above two pays dividends.

Frankly I would get the 10T for what you want as 24 inch is a bit handier than 26, and you get a better stock. The rail is whatever to me, magazine the same as hunting you should not need it and certainly not bench rest shooting but other than possibly loosing it there's no technical downside.

Axis has a Heave Barrel offering but I don't' think with the acutriger.

I do stand corrected on the 12FV. Its offered in 204, 223, 22-250 and 308.

.300 "maggies" > .30-'06 > .308 Win > .300 Savage > .303 Brit > .30-40 Krag > .30-30 Win > 7.62x39mm Russian.

jimbob86, maybe you could tell us where .307 Win, .30 T/C, .308 Marlin Express, .30 RAR, .300 BLK / Whisper, 7.62x25, the various .30 magnums, and others fit into that general power scale of .30 cals?

WOW,the 12FV can be had for around $400.:)

I paid $459 plus sales tax for mine, about 8 years ago.:(

May have to pick one up for a project.:D

I used % increasee from 30-30 up to the .308. If you use a % reduction from the .308 to 30-30 you get different numbers.

Your right on Steve, with the increase percentage.I was using percentage difference. But with my 4th grade education I screwed that up somehow.:o

Percentage Difference is 16.5% at muzzle,46% at 400.

Depends upon who is loading them and and how much they like their guns and cases.....

I am now the proud new owner of a Savage Axis II .308 bolt action. Thank you to everyone for your advice and help. Got 4 boxes of different ammo to see what she likes to eat. Not sure I'll make it out to break her in until next weekend. Range Report to come soon.

Got any pictures? Are you going to wrap it up and put it under the tree?

Picture will come next week. I am up visiting Mom and Dad for Christmas. Bought it at Gander Mountain near them. Probably won't even unbox it until I get home. It had some shipping oil/grease on it when I bought it and I don't have any of my cleaning equipment with me.

They fall into the obsolete or WGAS category except the 30 magnums which he mentions.

There you have it - kcub announces right here that .300 BLK is obsolete. Who knew? And jimbob86 didn't mention *any* .30 magnums, so not sure what you're talking about.
