30-06 vs. 270

Can we add .280 into the mix.
No--you can't ;) We have to use "commonly found factory ammo" as one of the baselines.

My all-around favorite rifle caliber is 30; not because of it's BC but because of it's versatility. I already have 308 and 300 wm rifles, so 30 06 is superfluous to me and 270 fills in nicely between the 308 and 300.

Jack O'Connor has coined the phrase "The three sisters" referring to the "270, 280 and 30-06" as being almost interchangeable. Jack obviously was the largest 270 supporter yet his wife also hunted with the 30-06 often.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this not that it matters when performance is looked at but the 25-06 270 280 30-06 and 8mm-06 are all the same piece of brass save for the fact that the neck has been sized to accommodate whatever bullet its shooting.

I went to the local watering hole last night to find the answer to this debate. I asked 9 female patrons and unamously they preferred larger and slower. Then I asked if any of them hunted and what rifle they chose. There was one 270 and one 7mm08. The rest were 243 and 6mm. When I got home I asked my wife. Her response was best of all. She said she loved me and understands my handicaps lol. I must say that she has more deer rifles than the average guy. Her newest is a x-bolt medallion in 270 wsm but before this she swapped back and fourth between a remington 700 30-06 and a weatherby markV in 300 weatherby.

She chooses these two over her others because these get more of a response from people. She loves it when some grown men are scared to try out the markV accumark. She shoots alot and I don't recommend other women trying that gun unless they have alot of range time under their belt. Another thing I've learned is that often times the women are better shots than their husbands.

For hunting it just depends on the game and how often.

I.e. rather than re-site a 30-06 used for Moose and Brown Bear you might be better off with a 270 for antelope up to elk.

that said, the 270s I have shot are damn difficult to get anything accurate load wise for bench shooting (1.25 is the very best). A lot claim they have but my experience as well as some written support says otherwise.

For bench shooting a 30-06 is usually easier to find loads for (all have exceptions of course, some 06s are picky or impossible le and some 270s are target masters)

Shooting game it makes no difference as bench rest accuracy is not possible and is meaningless.

I like the 30-06 for its military heritage but hunters don't care about that so for a lot its not a factor.
