30-06 vs. 270

Well, I like the .270 and 30-06 and in fact have several rifles chambered to both rounds. However, when I finally decided to bite the bullet and have a custom rifle made up,one that was not just a rebarreled milsurp but one with a few extra refinements and a stock by a known stock maker I went with a 1909 Argentine with the metal work by the Harry Lawson Company in Tucson and the stock bt Sterling Davenport. Cost me a bit of coins the realm but I decided it was to be a .280 Remington. :eek: Probably take it on my next elk hunt if I can get it to shoot the bullet I want. The Nosler 150 gr. ABLR. If not? There's always the Nosler Partition. ;)

I've had nearly sixty years of hunting and shooting, at ranges up to 500 yards. When I started hunting varmints, several of us had .30-06 bolt-action rifles and mine only had a 2.5x scope. One year, I averaged 230 yards for the first 10 woodchucks, two being about 500 yards (thanks to a spotter).

Up to about 20 years ago, I hunted deer with the '06, but after buying a .270 Win and seeing the performance, I gave the '06 to my son and haven't looked back.

The .270 Win, using 130 grain GMX bullets exiting the muzzle at 3,200+, has been devastating on deer and other critters. The difference in drop beyond 400 yards is significant. If you don't hit, you can't kill, and I appreciate the difference in trajectory, especially when shooting smaller game/varmints.

The new bullets and Reloder 22 powder have made the difference in ballistics and terminal effects for deer and smaller critters gives the nod to the .270 Win, in my book.

That said, when someone asks for a recommendation for deer and moose, I tend to recommend the .30-06, due to it's flexibility and heavier bullet availability for "over the counter" ammo. For most deer, I recommend factory bullets between 150 and 165, since expansion is more important than remaining energy and the heavier bullets tend to be a bit tough for average-sized deer, hit in the heart/lung area.
 
What about .25-06 compared to .270?

Seems like both are first and foremost flat shooting deer guns.

One shoots 120 and less, one shoots 130 or 150 grain.
 
Did Superformance supplant the now discontinued Hornady light magnum line? Is it the very same thing with just some marketing repackaging?

Pretty much. There may be some technical differences in how Hornady did it, but Superformance now occupies the niche Light Magnum formerly held.
 
I see there is a Superformance GMX bullet with polymer tip for expansion and interlock for retension. It does everything. It is the magic bullet (that killed JFK).

Have owned an '06, still own a 270, currently eyeballing a nice Winchester 54 in '06 ... No hatred for either one in my book. Both are excellent and very capable cartridges....as can be said about probably 100 other cartridges...
 
Look, we can all stop arguing...because I've already said it. The .30/06 is vastly superior in every way to the 270. Now, the .270 isn't a bad cartridge if you're a girl scout or a man weighting under 110 pounds but aside from that, a hunter always mans up and chooses the O6 for a zillion reasons. One it's better than a 270, two... heavier bullets, 3...knock down power, four...larger wound channel, and five...any lady within earshot that hears you shoot a .30/06 experiences the O6 phenomenon ie, her panties spontaneously fly off and she instantly wants to make you a sandwich. Now, do ya want to collect Barbie dolls and shoot a .270?...of do you want to hunt with a .30/06 and have hot chicks and plenty of game in the freezer? I know which one I'm carrying...the O6 Springfield!

Funny, I've always shot a 300 win mag and thought 06 was the girly cartridge. I would like to see a video of a 06 de-pantying though.;)
Heck, I have even taken a few deer broadside with my 223 with Barnes 55grain TSX and it did the job nicely

Couldnt agree more. I would like to add that unless you are shooting at more than 2 deer at a time you only need a single shot 30-06. Nothing on earth that bleeds can stand up to this brutal round.
It has dropped every game (and non game) animal known and more than a few enemy soldiers.
I must admit that my 10y/o beauty queen daughter does enjoy plinking with her 270.
 
i have the '06 and killed alot of deer with it. i also have a 270 and killed alot of game with it. personally, i've never had a woman take off her panties with either the '06 or the 270. i don't have any daughters but i have two sons and they like both('06 & 270). the '06 stays in the safe and the 270 comes out occasionally. the '06 is the standby of all cartridges. yes it kills. so does the 270. i like the 270 a bit better than the '06.
we should start a discussion on the 30-30 and 32 win spl and the 30-40 krag. while we are at it why not try the 444 marlin and the 45-70. next we'll try......
 
Its always been my belief that people who like speed vote 270 and people who like heavy bullets vote 30-06. I have both and several of each. My 270's all shoot 130 gr for longer shots but my 06's I shoot 150, 165, and even 180 round nose for closer shots. I am a 30 Cal fan. I carry the 30 cals when hunting certain bucks but when expecting to shoot does I carry 270 or 243.
 
I do the same except my general purpose rifle is a fly weight 308. I only use my 270 for when I am expecting to take a very long shot in certain kinds of hunting.
If I was forced to use one rifle then the 308 would be it because it's a short action, ridiculously light with a quality optic. Thank goodness variety keeps life interesting and I choose to use a lot of rifles and calibers.

Ok, seriously, if I could have gotten a stainless left handed .280 cheaply, I would have gotten that, but I decided to save several hundred $$ and get an '06, because the difference between them really comes down to splitting hairs.

Is a 200 ft lbs energy difference at the muzzle going to make a difference? What about an extra 5" of drop (when you have almost 3 feet of drop to compensate for)? The drop of the .270 is similar to the mags, but the 7mm mag carries more energy at that distance (especially if you increase the bullet weight). I think that I"m not likely to take a 300 yard shot, so any rifle with a MPBR of < 300 yards is good enough for me. If that changes, maybe I'll get a rifle more appropriate to my skills. OR rebarrel to 6.5-06. :cool:
 
We have to draw for deer tag and we can hunt deer/elk same season or separate seasons.

If I draw separate season buck tag like I did this year I'll hunt with 270 using 150gr bullet. As much as I like 270 I've never hunt cow or bull elk with 270.

This year I drew 4th season cow elk tag and I'll hunt with 30-06 using 165gr AB. I didn't have any luck on my archery bull elk tag.

I'm not trying to add fuel to the fire 270 vs 30-06 but I made a choice on what I want to hunt with.
