I have Models 317, 337, 36 and 650, all with 3 inch barrels - also a Model 51 with a 3.5 inch barrel. The Model 36 and 650 have the heavy barrel and they are real favorites.
FWIW, I had the same thought about mine, until I remembered how accurate my 640-1 is with what looks like the same kind of sight picture. I can't believe how good they shoot with that setup, but I sure do like it.
In the last month and a half I've bought a 3" model 60-15 .357 magnum and a 3" 36-1. They carry just as easily in my SmartCarry "security model" (dual-pouch) as do the 2"-ers (perhaps better, since they don't slide in too far), and they balance better and hit harder.
My only 3" is my favorite of all my guns, my 66-6 hi-viz. I'd love to get a 686, 65, or another 66 in 3", buy they never show up locally and I never seem to be quick enough to catch them online. Here she is in all of her "outfits."
The grips are my mutilation of a pair of Ajax or Badger grips. When I got them they were smooth and shiney, they now have a little roughness and are dull. But they fit my hand like a glove. I took to them with a file to get a slimmer profile and a better fit to my hand, then I sanded it to comfort.
Hello. I recently picked up this little thing like new for the right price.
This Model 64 is "only" a .38, but I feel pretty confident with it. The sights are "on" for me and the thing groups plenty well enough for my needs.
This slow-fire group was fired standing, two-hand hold, at ten yards single-action. I was mainly checking POA vs POI. The load was Remington 158-gr. SWCHP +P. It's "on" as far as I'm concerned.
Also fired at ten yards, but double-action, this target was shot with Federal American Eagle 130-gr. FMJ.
I am constantly amazed at how easy the 3" K's are to shoot and shoot well.
This one's a favorite. The DA is very smooth. With the Remington load mentioned previously, the average velocity is 883 ft/sec.
The only other 3" S&W I own is my wife's. It's a 3" LadySmith. It's loaded with the same Remington load as my Model 64.
Other than those two, I hit all around the 3" mark with a 2 1/2" Model 19 and a 3 1/2" Model 27.
With this old Safariland holster, this little dumpling conceals easily enough and makes a pretty nice carry package...at least for me.
I have:
60-.38 spec
66-.357
686-.357
657-.41 mag
629-.44 mag
625-2.45acp/auto rim
All Stainless, all 3 in barrels and all adjustable sights. They are old models I am told there more available in 3in including autos. I hope you enjoy your revolver. Waddy
