3 must own handguns?

For people looking to get into gun ownership what are the 3 must have handguns? My opinion would be.

#1 22 revolver. Arguably the best to learn on. No magazines which get expensive and tend not to be durable.
#2 1911 in whatever form fits your need.

#3 center fire revolver. In whatever suits your needs 357mag 4in would be my suggestion big enough for deer small enough to carry for defense.

Not much you could not do with the 3 of them.

I wanna play,,,

These three will do anything a person needs to do

.22 LR - S&W Model 17 Masterpiece,,,
For target practice and general plinking.

.38 Special - S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece,,,
For all around reliability in everyday defense.

9mm - CZ-75B,,,
Because someday the zombies might attack.

I disagree with a some of these recommendations. But after all, these are all opinions, right?

A .22 revolver is usually a very heavy DA pull. If the recommendation is to practice SA only, then I concur. Otherwise a Browning Buckmark would be a better option. .22LR and single-action is all about teaching proper aiming, breathing, etc. I don't think a DA revolver does that.

A 1911 is also great for SA target practice, but its order of arms is a little more difficult for a beginner to handle. No decocking mode so emptying the gun must be taught properly. They are also not the easiest to field strip and the initial cost of ownership (for a good one) is pretty high.

A .38/.357 revolver is a good recommendation, as is a 9mm semi-auto. Cheap ammo and good enough for protection.

If you can master a double action revolver trigger pull, then anything in single action should be a piece of cake.

1) S&W K-Frame
2) 1911
3) Anything in .22

I'll put about 3 long guns on a must need list before any handgun. IMO, there is no must have handguns. But what do I think are minimum wants?

Definitely a full size .22lr of some flavor. Just about any of the Rugers (revolver or semi) or Brownings fill the role fine. For the folks with money burning a hole in their pocket about any S&W will also do a great job (all revolvers and some semis). BTW, you can substitute this with a .32 cal revolver if you reload.

Next comes a 4" .357 DA revolver. S&W or Ruger, take your pick.

Last is a toss up and really depends on lot's of things. Most notably if you're a city slicker or country bumpkin. Last on the list for a city slicker would be a semi-compact semi for CC. Last on the list for a country bumpkin would be a Ruger SA in something that starts with a 4. Actually, I can and do get by just fine with neither of these.

Limiting this to handguns I'd say:

First a 357 magnum revolver for home defense/concealed carry.

Then a 22 revolver with a six inch bbl for fun.

And since we're stopping at three my last choice for a must have handgun would be an all steel semi auto in 9mm. A third generation Smith would be a good choice.

Sorry, I've never been interested in 1911's

#1. A .22 semiauto. Ruger 22/45.
#2. A .357 double-action revolver. Smith or Ruger anything.

#3. If you carry, a 5-shot .38. If you don't, a Remington 870 12-gauge.

Without being brand specific, my thoughts are...
  • An accurate .22LR with a 5 to 6 inch barrel. This will be your practice gun and a gun to pot small game meat. Ammo is small, light, cheap and easy to pack or carry.
  • A good quality .357 Magnum. If you intend to hunt, a 6-inch barrel otherwise a minimum of a 4-inch barrel. The versatility of the .38/.357 handgun is almost universally acknowledged. That makes it a "must own" over the .44 Magnum -- unless you need the .44 for Brown & Grizzly bears.
  • A high capacity .45 caliber auto - Glock, XD, etc or a 1911 if that's what you shoot best. But definitely the .45 ACP. It's been 100 years and it is still one of the top defensive rounds.

1) High capacity service sized pistol.

2) S&W or Ruger medium framed .357 with a 3 or 4 inch barrel.

3) A .22 caliber revolver with if possible a 6 inch barrel.

1. 357 Magnum DA revolver -- barrel length is your choice, as long as it is at least 4".
2. 9mm semi-auto pistol (Glock 19 is my choice, but others will do from Sig, H&K, S&W, SA, etc.).
3. Full-size 1911.

.357 revolver w/ a 4 or 6 inch barrel
9 mm / .40 S&W / .45 ACP semi auto service pistol
.38 revolver snubbie or .380 / 9 mm pocket semi auto pistol
