270 Win VS 270 WSM

Mystro that is a fine looking rifle and apparently it shoots.

These discussions come up from time to time and they are fun to read but no one usually gets their mind changed. If you like your magnum you are not likely to change your mind.

My .02 is not worth much but I like the original 270 win. The short magnums will always be short magnums because of the magnum bolt head. It will net you about 100-150fps more than the original cartridge that is pretty hot already. You can load it up or down.

As far as a long range wonder either will do fine for hunting. As for competition the fodder is just not there. No one makes truly competitive bullets for the 270. They never have. I think it would make a fine competitive long range rig but the people that count simply will not make the bullets for it. Recoil is also a factor for competition.

A 270-08 ai would be interesting but would not gain anything on the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Some people are using the 6.5 SAUM but it is finicky and kicks too much. The same for the 7wsm. The long range practical match guys are using the 6.5 Creedmoor and most of the winners are shooting the 6mm Creedmoor. Recoil and barrel wear is a factor during long strings of fire especially in the heat.

The short magnums are here to stay and lots of people like them. They do not offer much more than the standard cartridge for what I can do with them.

The standard 270 has a lot going for it still. You can get a box of cartridges for it almost anywhere in the world.

Kraig, I own both the .270 win and the .270 WSM. They are both strictly hunting rifles and I love them both. My .270 win is a Remington 700 with a 24" barrel. I use it for deer and elk when hunting from the truck. The .270 WSM is a Winchester 70 featherweight with a 20" barrel. I use it for horse hunting.

I was under the impression that Winchester developed the WSM to be lighter (short action) and shorter (easier to carry on a horse) without compromising the ballistics of the original cartridge.

I have not chronographed the two separate guns, but I would bet I am getting about the same ballistics from the shorter WSM barrel as I am from the longer standard long action barrel.

It seems to work on game. I sight both in with a 200 yard zero and shoot them both the same in the field. Lots of deer, elk and antelope have fallen to either, never changed my hold-overs.

That's my theory. And it works for me!

Besides, a true Wyoming gun and hunting nut needs more guns than his wife has shoes!

I'm in WA, but I hear ya!

If you get the right wife, its fairly easy. If you don't, you're gonna need warehouse space!:D
