25-06 or .270 or somewhere in the range

Just bought a new 700 CDL 25-06 and love it. Great choice for Deer and smaller game and for long range varmint. As many mentioned isn't very practical or available if you don't handload. I planned to load for it which is why I got one. .270 ,30-06 , .308 are the most common cartridges for factory ammo and some of the cheapest. If larger game is preferred and you already have a .243 I might consider .270 and above.

Good luck!

How can anyone say ammo is hard to find for the .25-06? When I bought mine that was true. But I see it in Walmart all the time now days.

I don't think anybody said ammo is hard to find for the 25-06. But it is harder to find than 270 ammo, which is well and truly available everywhere and with a much better selection than 25-06.

I'd have to with a ruger American or m77 compact in 7mm-08. I live and hunt in western Arkansas and I've never run across an animal here that the 7-08 won't handle easily out to 300 yards.

I had a 270 WSM Tikka T3 SS Lite left handed. While a Tikka is well under your price range they are a pretty nice gun for the $, although i prefer the Browning XBolt.
The 270 WSM has fairly light recoil as well, less then a 30-06. It'll also reach way past 300 yards. And its a short action.

Ammo was never hard to find when I bought my rifle but not everyplace carried it. I did get a lesson in economics with the rifle. Seemed every time I depleted the dealers stock the new batch that came in was $.50 higher.

Halfway though the summer I started loading it myself with a Lee Loader. That rifle never saw factory ammo again.
