possibly, i will take leave every year during hunting season. HOPEFULLY i will have one chosen when i go home in 6 months. It's really important to me that i get the a rifle best suited for me and my needs especially considering i will be spending + 1000$. The reason for posting is to get a general census of opinions from many people that are much more experienced than my self. I am very appreciative of peoples opinions on this question i have asked, regardless of wether or not you think i should be considering the purchase of my next rifle.

AGAIN thanks everyone for posting

It took me 15 years to make my idea of a custom .338-06 a reality. I started dreaming of a.338-06 in 1997 when I first started dreaming of a .338-06, and I got my first used custom .338-06 in 2003. So it isn't a stretch to wait 2.5 years for a rifle.

So it isn't a stretch to wait 2.5 years for a rifle.

If you're his age, yeah, maybe a couple of years isn't a big deal.

If you're pushing 60, or retired, having to wait "years" for what you want starts to look a lot less attractive.

Time, at that point, ain't on your side.

The O.P's situation is not hard to understand, Taylorce1.....I suspected as much.....I spent a year in Korea a long time ago......that's why I asked the question. Sorry for the tongue-in-cheek approach, but I thought it would be slightly humorous while getting the full background.

Based on the responses, it's seems to be of some interest and concern.

As for myself, another vote for .270. But hey, in a couple years, who knows what new firearms or cartridges will be around that might fit the bill better?

That is, if guns and/or hunting is still legal.:(

Im going to do a little more digging on .270 .308 and 30-06
but i think the 30-06 may be a little more recoil than i want, this gun will be used for whitetail anyways.

I started shooting the '06 when I was a kid and learned to love it and its versatility. Now I have 5 of them.

I always dreamed of getting my go to gun when I was young and it took me quite a while to get it. What was it? The Weatherby Mark V in the 460. Prolly took me 20 years to get it.

As far as the recoil of the '06, with a decent load and a 150 gr bullet, it is not bad at all in my book. BUT, recoil does not bother me much as I have most of my rifles fitting me.

Of course, if the recoil does bother you or you are intimidated by it, then you never will be able to shoot the gun no matter how accurate it is.

Just make sure that whatever you wind up getting, make sure it fits.

I once had a Remington M700 in 30-06. Made in 1970 and bought it new. No one that ever tried it could shoot it worth a damn because it flat out hurt. The most I could shoot it at a sitting was maybe 5 shots. The stock just frogged the crap out of the shoulder. It was not as accurate as my others in that caliber, so I got rid of it. Lesson learned and have profited from it since.

1) 25-06 or .270 or somewhere in the range
2) I am looking for another whitetail rifle.
3) ***I DO NOT RELOAD***

Given these 3 criteria, go 270. Ammo is easier to find and cheaper when you do.

If you can shoot a 300 WM at all, the recoil of a 130 grain 270 load will be like a walk in the park.

" i think Im going to forget about the 25-06, it is a little to close in size to the .243."

As I said before, only close on paper.

Since I was attacked I will respond. For elk, pennsylvania does require minimum of 27 caliber 130 grain bullet, there could be more it was only a side point.
Op said 90% of his hunting. I would want more options and the 270 does that.

Besides he lives in Japan, I would rather have a 270 if Godzilla shows up. 270 loads up to 180 grain, the 06 up to 120 grain.
The 25-06 is a great cartridge! It's just that the 270 is better for 90% of his deer hunting. Not to mention the BC of of the 270 does better than the 25's.
Op did say he has 300win the 270 does comes pretty close to that. He also mentioned 243, the 270 is probably the best midpoint.

Also, one key point, the 270 would be best back-up for both!

I just checked, 270 with 130 grain accubond is minimum required for Godzilla. BTW for brands, go with REM 700 or one of the Savage's
Yeah--but what if one of the Transformers or speed racer show up instead of Godzilla?

The chances of anyone actually ever drawing an elk tag in PA is only slightly better than seeing a real life Godzilla. Point creep will hurt even a 19 year old soldier from ever having a real chance with PA's management plan for elk. So if he ever did draw a PA elk tag he could buy a rifle for that hunt if he needs a backup to his .300 Win Mag.

PA only issued 108 total elk tags in 2014, 27 of those were bull tags. The had 26,000 plus applicants, which means you had about a .4% chance of drawing. There are far better odds of drawing in Western States, plus in CO you can get elk tags over the counter. Best thing about it is any rifle the OP buys between his .243 and .300 is legal to hunt elk with.

Honest.......I didn't know they even had elk in Pennsylvania.

As much as I love .270 Winchester......I'd go with .338 Lapua for Godzilla.

Thread is about to get closed.......

We do have elk, big ones, we have Elk county. And we also have some of the biggest bears, 800lbs.+!
Didn't mean to focus on elk, but some guys just don't plunk down $$ for a new gun to shoot a different animal. Versatility!

Since I was attacked I will respond.

Demolition Man, had no intention of attacking you. I've been looking at going Elk hunting and just haven't seen any caliber restrictions. But then I didn't know Pensylvania had Elk either.

No problem Joed, I was totally joking with that. But, as mentioned earlier it is tough to get an elk tag here. Bear are a different story, think the state took over 4000 this season.

30.06 or 270?

Well me and my buddy's are split...half are 06 fans and the 270 guys swear by that cal.
Me I like the 06..

I like both but do not own a .270 Win. If I see a .270 come up for sale I'll buy it. Maybe I'm weird but I don't like to follow the herd.

Right now it's vogue to own a 6.5mm. But, I'm a hunter and I shoot hunting bullets not match bullets. The .25-06 and I'd bet the .270 too can do anything I need done.
