10mm is DEAD!!!

A 10mm Thread that I havent chimed in on..this has gone on long enough :)

I never get tired of hearing: "If their was demand, the gun companys would make it..Gee I wish XYZ made their ABC in 10mm". I contend that if the only mainstream widely know brand of .40 caliber pistols was Glock and it wasnt carried by almost ever LE agency in the nation, it would peter out in under a year. Also, popularity begets popularity...especialy law enforcement popularity. Like I have said before, thats why we all wanted a .357 in the 70's a 9mm in the 80's and a .40 in the 90's. Thats what the cops were carrying and the gun rags were rageing about.

Here is a quick pic of my twin 10's

Carbon_15, while I agree with you to an extent, this does not explain the popularity of the .45 ACP, which stayed popular and grew in popularity with the general shooting public before police agencies looked at it again. Then again, there is something very American about shooting a .45.
Then there is the AK-style rifle and the 7.62*39 cartridge. That seems enormously popular without the aid of widespread American police/military use.

I prefer to shoot bullets out of platforms I get to choose, not guns I am cornered into buying for that bullet.

I hope the 10mm isn't dead, because I bought a new G29 yesterday afternoon! My G20 is so much fun to shoot, I just had to bring home its little brother from the gunshop.

Anyway, I asked at the gunshop about ammo. The clerk told me he had very few requests for 10mm ammo any more and didn't stock much of it. It's a dying round, he said.

However, I'm not worried. The 10mm may have its ups and downs. But, like the .41 Mag, it just keeps on shootin'.

:cool:

Well, what's not to like about the 10mm "platforms [you] get to choose" from among now?

Glock: 2 choices on this platform;

Tanfaglio Witness: 2 choices on this platform. This is, in a sense, the original platform for the 10mm anyway, i.e., the Witness is a CZ-clone, as was the Bren Ten. Hopefully, someday CZ will offer its 97B scaled-down to 10mm specs;

Pre-sellout Smith autoloaders in 10mm: at least 6 choices on this platform (i.e., 1006/1026, 1076/1066, 1086/1046, some still NIB - check out Gun List sometime);

Revolvers: Okay, admittedly slim on choices here, but the Smith 610 is still available, new & used in different barrel lengths;

1911-platform: the sky's the limit here. It really depends on what you want to spend. There's the Delta Elites, for starters, again some NIB or barely used, but if you can't find one, 1911-pistols in .40 Swishy-Walker can be readily converted to 10mm, as many .40 Kimbers have already done (see earlier posts). Dan Wesson is releasing its 1911 Pointman Major in 10mm this year. Or, Wilson, Heinie, STI, Novak, Dane Burns, Mark Morris, etc., can all build you a 10mm pistol on a 1911-platform, one for CCW/personal defensive or a "full-house" Space Gun. Again, it largely depends on the limits of your wallet.

The above 5 "platforms" cover a wide range of pistols, regardless of specific caliber.

If you really want something that goes "bang" in 10mm, you're hardly "cornered into buying" only a particular gun. And certainly no less than in any other caliber.

The 10mm is what you want it to be. (Philosophical huh? ;) ) My favorite gunshop had to order my 10mm Witness and had never seen one. They had a 1076 but it sat on the shelf forever. They had one box of very dusty American Eagle wimp ammo,one box of even wimpier Starfire and that`s all. After I bought both they never restocked any 10mm. They say the 10mm is pretty much dead. On the other hand another shop 15 miles away keeps a 10mm Witness or 2 in stock (for more $$$ though) along with a Glock 29 and 20. They sell regularly. They also manage to have a Delta Elite from time to time. One week they told me they sold 3 10mms,got another one in and sold that one too! They stock American Eagle, Pro Load,Hornady and Corbon 10mm,the last 3 in several weights. They sell enough that they have to order more every week and are sometimes sold out of what I want. So which is it? Like I said, it is what you want it to be..... :) Marcus

The reason you see so many 10 MM casings in Upstate NY is that the DEC Police Dept uses 10mm glocks!

They decided to switch years ago when their 9mm glocks were considered inadequate to dispatch car crippled deer on the highways. Or at least that is the excuse they give for going to the 10.

Wish I could find the range you go to. I could use some 10mm brass.:D

I love my 10mm. I could remember a time when 10mm cases were almost worth their weight in gold. :D

I still find myself scrounging for them whenever I go to the range.

I really iuke my 1076, but I wish for a medium frame revolver. that's probably a pipe dream, though. Bullet pull is apparently an issue in the smaller/ lighter guns. Must be why 610's have unfluted cylinders and full underlugs.

Can't by a Witness 10 in MY state.

Oops. Said that already. Sighhh... :rolleyes:

The 10 is dead? Long live the 10! I love mine. If brass is an issue, I have about two thousand cases (I think) courtesy of the FBI. I might be able to get more when they come out to shoot. Once fired out of an MP5/10, dirty, but usable.
