10mm is DEAD!!!

Oh Oh - Tamara's teed off

This is not the venue to disrespect a 10mm sidearm. How do we know this? Trust us, we know.

I've been seeking a 10mm Witness, cause I like the CZ form factor, and a G20 just doesn't snuggle into my grasp. I'm not too concerned about a compact vs a full size, since I have CCW class pistolas, but I am sold on a good modern, versatile design like a 10mm.

I already have .40 S&W sidearms. and most days I carry a .45 Kimber, but I'd like a choice - and a 10mm seems to meet the needs of any serious social occasion.

It is called paying attention to detail. I am always nice, I simply requested Terry pay closer attention to what he was doing on the posts so that we could all benefit from actually reading his posts.

You need to understand that all capitals posts can be physically painful to MANY members.

The gunbroker link posted earlier is a listing by a good person from which to buy a 10mm Witness. I bought mine from Paula, and it was a smooth transaction.

Yeah, so "dead" they keep making guns and ammo for it.

You'd think with two current threads containing multiple posts that easily refute the claim that the 10mm Auto is a "dead round," the 10mm-haters would call it a night.

Oh well, ... :rolleyes:

3 word for ya: HARD TO KILL.

Terry's right. The 10mm Auto (in pistols and ammo) hasn't just continued to sell at some marginal level, sales have actually increased, and this resurgence has been noted by the gun press, previously long silent on all things 10mm.

Like some zombie or vampire that simply refuses to stay in its coffin, dead and buried where uninformed "urban legend" says it should be, the 10mm Auto keeps coming back to the obvious consternation of some folks. Why they get frustrated with its persistence, I couldn't tell you. Maybe the big 10 stirs up some deep psychological insecurity for them when compared to the prissy calibers they prefer. Comparative caliber phobia? Defensive feelings of inadequacy? Who knows?

As far as the 10mm's staying power, my theory is that once a shooter gets a fair taste of it, the round sells itself and they think, "Sh*t, why didn't I get one of these sooner?"

The list of what's selling is quite impressive for a supposedly "dead" cartridge:

Smith 610 revolvers;

Glock 20s/29s;

Witnesses (full-size & compact);

pre-sellout Smith 10mms floating around in all varieties, some still NIB;

and Delta Elites that ABSOLUTELY refuse to loiter long on dealer shelves.

There were 3 DEs in my local gun shop before X-mas: 2 standard models in blue and a stainless DE Gold Cup. Each had extra mags, and all were in excellent shape. Well, the blue DEs are gone, and when I went in today so was the GC.

By the way, not only RSR but Jerry's Sports Center sells a lot of Witnesses. Have your dealer contact Jerry's if RSR is out. This time of year a lot of wholesalers are running low on inventory or back-ordered on new stock.

The list of who's selling 10mm ammo is quite long, but if it were indeed a "dead" caliber you can bet that smaller companies like Texas Ammo Company (TAC) wouldn't be bringing out and advertising new 10mm Auto lines, but that's exactly what TAC's done with their 10mm "Express" line, which includes 4 different loadings. Ditto ProLoad. Ditto Georgia Arms, etc., etc., etc.

Dan Wesson will be releasing its 1911-pattern Pointman Major in 10mm next year. Why would a gun maker chamber a pistol in a "dead" caliber? For laughs? No, because they know there's a market for it. And unless it's a POS out of the box it'll sell.

The thread on the 10mm HK isn't all theory, as a couple of posters from Alaska have successfully converted full-size .40s. Check it out. With the .40 Kimbers, owners have the barrels reamed out to 10mm, install a stiffer recoil unit, get some DE or CMC mags, and start shooting. Apparently, 'smith Dane Burns is getting requests to do this "conversion" all the time.

Care to guess what effect all that has, in turn, on sales of 10mm ammo?

I like the 10 mm, but which I had other choises in a platform. If Glock built on on a Practical/Tactical frame, I just might get one.

I'd definitely get a Beretta Cougar of 92/96 type frame in 10mm, and will give the Dan Wesson a very good look. Funny if my first Dan Wesson turns out to be a 1911.

Now my question is why didn't the .40 (Triton) Super take off? Same idea as the .357 Sig, faster than the 10mm.

Guys, I hear ya. The fact remains that hardly anyone currently chambers 10mm. Dan Wesson is coming out with one? So what? Haven't even seen one of these on a shelf yet. Where are the Kimbers? Springfields? Berettas? SIGS? Taurus's? Rugers? Kahrs? HKs? Why did Smith decide to discontinue it's 10mm auto line ( and before you start shouting I know there is the 610.)

Mr. Murbach,
Why the 400 Corbon? It appears the 10mm is all we need by your post!

DECENT CARTRIDGE; THE REST IS HYPE

I miss the 41AE; now THAT'S DEAD.

Hard for me to get cases........and Speer stopped making their 180g Gold Dot bullet for it (bastards), but not covered with dirt as long as I'm around.

I much prefer the 41 Magnum to the 10mm.

I don't know about dead, but the above is quite easily explained, *&* sold out to the knee-jerk liberal, commie-pinko bedwetter, Klintonista ChiCom sympathizers, that take every opportunity to try and destroy our country. Thats all. It's their choice, they are free to make it, but if they think that they will continue to sell their products to folks who support R.K.B.A., they are flat wrong.

I get the funny feeling that the 10mm will be around long after *&* is long gone.:D

Partisan disclaimer: I carry a Glock 29 (I wuv my wittle Gwock):cool:

I'm another convert. Bought a Witness Compact a few months ago, and am now hooked on this caliber. I've been checking locally for a Glock 29 and a Pre-Agreement 610, but may have to find them on the auction boards.

The 10 is alive, well and appreciated in my home. I fell in love with it after reading the extensive FBI tests in Handgun Magazine and had to have one. I now am looking for a 610.
Have most of the other calibers including .41 mag but prefer the 1066 with night sights.;)

mcshot, 1066 is a sweet piece. First gun I carried for duty. Try a Harrts recoil rod in it. Makes a nice gun even better.

1006 is my home defense gun, with winchester silvertips.

Just curious, but since the 41 magnum and full power 10mm loads are ballistically equal, why do you prefer the 41?:confused:

Not to mention finding 41 magnum ammo is 3 times as hard as finding 10mm ammo. (Matter o' fact, I can't remember the last time I saw a box of 41 magnum on a dealers shelf, of course I'm not looking either).

I'm as big a 10mm fan as you'll find, but I'll be the first to say that that statement is incorrect. .41 Mag just has too many advantages in case capacity and bullet weight selection; it can be loaded a lot more potently than the 10mm.

I'm looking here at some Cor-Bon .41 Magnums. 265gr hardcast bullet at 1300+fps for over one thousand foot-pounds at the muzzle. Yikes! :eek:

10mm was near extinction, but it is making a comeback, with help from the 10mm round mag limit. The real problem with 10mm is not the lack of guns, but the lack of decent loads for it.

I too would like to see a Glock 34/35 or HK Tactical in 10mm, with some hot loads.

Speaking of Smith 1066s ...

SOG is selling "very good condition" 1066s for $359, no night sites. You're probably just over $400 with a friendly FFL. You can shoot it as is, or start adding to it.

Wolff's carries a range of stronger recoil springs for the Smith 10mms as well as XP mag springs.

Brownell's, IIRC, sells the Novak Tritiums that'll easily replace the nonTritium Novaks that come on these 1066s. They should hit dead-on to POA. Brownell's also carries grips for these 3rd Gen. Smiths with the straight or arched back strap, whichever you prefer.

For someone wanting to take a Smith 10mm still further, Bar-Sto offers its match-grade barrels for the 1066/1076 (same 4" barrel length, either a "drop-in" or one that'll need fitting).

In the way of custom work Novaks offers a "Smith Package" and has slicked-up many a Smith 10mm, including mine. :)

For the persistent, there are always options in 10mm. :D You just have to want it enough.

I understand, from a handloading standpoint, that the 41 has more flexibility due to it's case structure. I was speaking more in terms of the commercial loads that the average joe will have to select from. By the by, I went to the range/gunshop today to do some shooting (10mm, of course) and could not find a single box of 41 magnums. Asked the counter guy if they had any and he said they usually special order it. This was at the biggest gunstore in Seattle.
No offense to the 41 mag, I'm sure it's a great cartridge, but I'll take 10-15 rds of 10mm with quick mags changes, to six 41's any day.

I love the 10mm cartridge. When I fire a fullpower 357 magnum that are pushing 600 ft lbs of energy in my S&W 19 it stings my hand and after 2 cylinders I want to stop shooting. Rounds at this energy level aren't much better in an N Frame Smith. Yet 600 ft lbs rounds out my Glock 20 are nothing and I can shoot a 100 rounds without thinking about it. Even one-handed the recoil is very manageable, even fun. After only 6 weeks into the 10mm caliber I ordered a Glock 29 to boot. Did I mention the ease of reloading 10mm? As long as this kind of power and controllability can be achieved in a semi-auto, the 10mm will continue. (The recoil-conscious need not apply).

;)

10 mm isnt dead in upstate ny .. i see piles of casings in the sand at my local range ... definately by more than one person ..
never fired a 10mm .. but ... the phrase "10mm" sounds pretty cool .... just my 2 cents .. :rolleyes:

I'm interested, but what in the world is SOG? Thanks to anyone who answers this or responds to me by e-mail.

Patrick:

SOG = (full name) Southern Ohio Gun, International Inc.

Address: 240 Harmon Ave., P.O.Box 590, Lebanon Ohio, 45036.

http://www.southernohiogun.com

They're a wholesaler, meaning they deal only with FFL-holders (retail gun dealers). So if your FFL hasn't done so already, have him/her send SOG a signed copy of their current FFL. That gets SOG's monthly flyer listing the dealer prices for the many pistols, rifles, etc., they have in stock, some new, many used or surplus (like military rifles).

Also, you see SOG advertise all the time in Shotgun News and Gun List, though not as many items listed as in their flyers.

Hope this helps.
