10mm and 45ACP

ive fired a g20, both with and without stronger recoil springs. the difference was notable.

it got me interested in the 10mm cartridge.

i now own a 1911 in 10mm.

a week ago i shot a 1911 in .45acp, and my 1911 in 10mm back to back.

10mm was loaded medium hot 180gr/1100fps, .45acp was blazer brass 230gr 850fps.

while the 10mm had more muzzle flip, i had no problem emptying the 9 round mag of 10mm just as fast and accurately as the 8 round .45acp mag.

i agree tho with the reloading for being key to 10mm, its the only way to get the full potential out of the cartridge.

its about the only way to shoot reasonably affordably.

For all those who say that the 10mm is more difficult to shoot than a .45, what kinds of guns are you shooting it out of? 180grn Double Taps from my S&W 1076 are actually easier for me to shoot than standard 230grn hardball from my S&W 1911 (all steel 5" barrel) and about on par with 127grn +P+ Winchester Rangers from my CZ-75. For anyone who's shot more than one gun in 10mm, how do 1911's, Glocks, EAA Witnesses, and S&W autos compare with regards to 10mm recoil?

10mm - good round. .45 - good round. You can get a slightly higher capacity with 10mm in some 10mm handguns. Although, I have an STI 2011 that can squeeze up to 14 rounds per mag/chamber. 10mm is more powerful than .45, but both are good defensive rounds and with more power there is required more effort to control that power.

I personally choose to use a Glock 17 9mm for self defense eventhough I have several 45's and a 10mm. I'm simply more comfertable and confident with that in a variety of different situations.

i thought the g20 with heavy recoil spring was "slightly" more manageable than my 5" 1911, but i dont have the 22lb recoil spring installed yet.

Even with buffalo bore 180grHP, which is at about the top end for 10mm, the recoil is really not that bad, more then my G21, but very manageable, and with a little practice you can empty a mag in a hurry. The G20 is my go to gun. If you dont handload(which i dont) the cost of ammo will burn a hole if you pocket.

i have owned both my g20 and g21 for years. the goto gun is my g20 as i carry both onduty (b4 i retired) and off. great gun, shoots great, great knockdown and extra ammo (15 over 13 per mag). now in real world .45 acp is able to be gotten anywhere, 10mm you better start reloading. hot 180gr and 200gr are great to put down a target fast. now the .45 is great and can drop a target fast too just cant do any hunting with a .45 acp and can with a 10mm.

Maybe the 10mm really has staying power. I know it is my favorite hadgun cartridge.

If you shoot a 10mm auto 1911 government model and a .45acp 1911 government model to compare recoil, you might be able to tell the difference; but you can also train to compensate.
Same this with comparing a Glock 20 and a Glock 21.

The only round I know that has greater FPS and FPE than the doubletap rounds are buffalo bore. Are there any others? For almost all of the commercially available rounds, the 10mm wins

Its not an issue if you handload.
You can compare different brands of ammo all day and use that to say that this particular one is "hotter" than this one.

The fact of the matter is, is that loaded to its potential, the .357 is a hotter round than hottest 10mm.

the .357 uses 110gr-180gr bullets
the 10mm uses 135-200gr bullets

the .357 has a 5gr better spread, but doesnt reach the heavier weights many people prefer.

of my 3 manuals.

.357 lightest: 110gr/1693fps =699 ft/lb
heaviest:180gr/1101fps =483 ft/lb

10mm lightest: 135gr/1397fps =584 ft/lb
heaviest: 200gr/1150fps =587 ft/lb

so yes, the verry lightest .357 loads exceed the 10mm loadings the 10mm has more energy over all loadings.

there are also guys that shoot 220gr 10mm bullets, but i dont know the load data.

When ballistics are close I go with whatever I have more or can get more ammo for. While I'd personally lean towards 45ACP the 10MM would be a better "woods gun," though for that I just carry a 44 mag instead. Hope you like your Glock 21, I loved mine!
