Alright guys, my birthday is coming up next month, and I am going to purchase a new weapon. I'll be carrying it around for CCW and I have narrowed it down to two that have caught my fancy. I would like to know which one you would buy, why, and all of that good stuff. So let me know what you think

1. Taurus Public Defender - 2" model

2. Ruger sr9c

There may be questions about which I'll get the most use out of, those type things. I'm really buying it to just buy it. I have a capable CCW now, but I was just looking for something different. I have night stand guns, so... this is one to just have, carry sometimes, etc.

Have a good one.

I think 9 out of 10 people on these forums have an aversion to Taurus so I think you'll probably get an overwhelming response for the Ruger. I'm also one of them, Taurus's quality is just hit or miss and I don't like to take that chance when buying a firearm. Go with the Ruger.

+1

Of those 2 choices ....I would go with the Ruger as well ...but its a weak recommendation.

But honestly, I would ask - why these 2 options ?? What is it that attracts you to each of them / or either of them ??

Given the choices, I would also opt for the Ruger. No real opinions regarding this choice, however, other than to say I trust Ruger a bit more than Taurus.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with the Ruger (it does seem like a nice CCW), I have to ask myself why you have not considered the 3" barreled XD9 SC or XD40 SC (my personal choice). This is assuming, of course, that you have not already considered the XD.

The only downside of the XD is that the sights are not easily moved (they put these sights in TIGHT). Good thing they rarely need it.

As a side note- While I like the rear adjustable sight of the sr9c, as it would certainly make "dialing in" a bit easier, it seems as if this sight could potentially be more prone to snagging. Thus, I may hesitate using such sights on a CCW. Just my .02 cents.

I'm not sure about their revolvers, but Taurus automatics are quite iffy. I read on two other forums were someone had the same problem I had: the gun wouldn't fire with the trigger pulled all the way back. Then upon release, BANG. Also my magazine would release on its on every 6-7 shots. And I believe you'll find people not satisfied at all with the Taurus customer service either. "Lifetime warranty"6 means you can send it back for the rest of your life and they don't really care if it's fixed or not. I had to send mine back three times and that gets expensive. Save yourself some pain and heartache (and $) and get the Ruger. They are famous for great customer service, and I've only had my SR9 for about a year, but not one FTF yet.

I think the Judge is a goofy weapon.

Get the Ruger.

Well like I said before, this weapon isn't going to be filling a "need", just a want. I've always thought the idea of shooting the 410 out of the Judge would be a fun gun to have, and to shoot.... and to carry.

The Ruger I have held, looked at, played with and when it released earlier this year, caught my eye from the get-go. It's about what I want / like out of a carry gun. Looks nice, feels nice... all-in-all just like it.

I'm all for someone suggesting new weapons for me to look at to have. The only thing I've heard, and since I've never shot a springfield, is that they aren't as well built, and shouldn't be trusted as much as most people do. This came from the gentlemen who did our self defense, and ccw classes we went to awhile back.

I'm not against a Glock, but I don't like em either, if that makes sense to you....

I don't know, maybe I'm leaning back toward the Ruger since so many people have had bad dealings with Taurus.

I have no issues with Taurus. A buddy of mine has a 7 shot .357 snub and it is VERY nice. The same friend had a different one's cylinder lock-up after less than 100 rounds. (I don't know the cause of it.) The problem with them is their quality control seems spotty. Kind of like the old saying, "Don't buy one made on Friday."

I vote for the Ruger between the two choices.

Somebody once GAVE me a Taurus because they were having so many problems with it. Seriously. Whole story here:

http://www.thehighroad.us/showthread.php?t=407774

Well...the conclusion was, the 605 involved was a total birth defect case - frame wasn't straight at all, which they'd missed on the first attempt to fix. Trigger was sticking out past the side of the triggerguard, highly unsafe with a kydex holster just for starters...and no, the trigger wasn't bent, the frame was. I don't EVEN want to know how they managed THAT.

They declared it scrap and told me they had no more - this was just about the peak of the Great Obama Gun Rush[tm]. So I had 'em give me a concealed-hammer 38+P-capable snub instead, checked it out thoroughly once I got it, and sold it.

Don't. Buy. A. Taurus.

Now. In contrast, I know somebody who has the first series Ruger centerfire auto - the P85. Great gun! Heavy, as it has an aluminum frame instead of polymer, but it's a damned fine weapon and has held up well. It has the "Mk2" upgrades which were free from Ruger. It's all the personal defense gun he needs and it's still in mint condition after a lot of use.

It's true that Ruger has made some new-model bloopers recently. Hell, they did all the way back in 1985 when my buddy's gun shipped. But they've always done a quick recall, paid shipping both ways, taken care of issues as quick as they could and often threw in freebies like a 2nd magazine or something for people's troubles.

Taurus on the other hand has had consistent QC issues with some models that Ruger would have done a recall for. Instead, Taurus denies the problem, forces people to pay shipping at least on the first round of fixes and often doesn't get it right. To their "credit" they'll usually do free shipping on the second and subsequent fix attempts but...ghaaaa.

For God's sake buy a Ruger over a Taurus any day.

The SR series appear to be very good guns. If I was shopping for an auto they'd be in the running. The SR9C is kind a neat because it's got a barrel and slide only fractionally shorter than the full-size and includes both a large mag (off the SR9) and an adapter that turns the long mag into a long grip...giving you basically a full-size overall gun. OR you can run the short mag and get a shorter grip. Your choice. Cool.

This is news to me. With all due respect, I strongly disagree with your source and wonder where he is getting his intel from.

I owned an XD45 (sold it for another Sig...what can I say, I like Sigs) and it proved flawless for over 800 rounds, out of the box, regardless of what I fed it. Ditto for my current XD40 SC.

Will this always be the case? Who knows? Frankly, I think almost every "current" handgun made has potential issues. After all, we are speaking of man made and mass marketed mechanical items here.

Not to start a flame war or anything, but I have several friends of mine who used to own various "popular/highly rated" Ruger semi-autos. Out of these 3 friends, 2 now choose to carry the XD. The other went with a Sig.

There is a reason that the XD has taken off the way it has. Also, it has been out long enough for anyone to "know better." The last time I checked, it is still a solid and very popular gun. Now, the XDm, I am not sure it is worth the money, IMHO. But, the XD line...well worth it as far as I am concerned.

Keep in mind, I am not try to "sell" you the XD; I am merely defending it, given that I have intimate experience with these weapons. If one does not like the looks, fine. If one does not like the fit, fine. But, for someone to dismiss the XD as unreliable? This I have an issue with; not against you, but against the advice you have been given. Once the XD is no longer consistently dependable, it is gone. However, I do not suspect this will happen anytime soon.

But, this is your gun, not mine. So, each to his/her own. I can live with that.

I haven't used either...

So why am I posting?

I ask these questions too--to find out if I missed anything in my review/shooting of the gun that I need to go back and check...

So...

Go shoot them again and look at all of those items you want...

Safety--magazine, drop, thumb?
Mag release-both sides or USP/Walter?
Just want one or the other?

I will be posting about opinions between three guns later, but it will be you, in the end, that has to be happy with the gun.

There is a saying, "Opinions are like ______, everyone has one." We shouldn't be looking to share them too much or look to someone else to say, "I want his/hers." :D

Validation from others is worthless if you don't like it :)
We all have heard of lemons, and a friend of mine will never buy a Jeep (I've never had a problem with mine) and will only buy a Honda or Toyota (I've seen plenty of those on the side of the road too).

If you aren't sure, go shoot them both again.

Let us know what you choose!

Not necessarily true, but if it were, there would probably be a reason...

Now as regards the Judge/ Public Defender (or any other variants)...read some reviews and some threads.

In my opinion (worth exactly what you paid for it) the Judge is a compromise, and a poor one at that. A .410 guage revolver is a joke. A long cylinder, 5-shot .45 LC, is too long of cylinder, too short of barrel, and one shot short.

I know two people who bought them. Both have shot them (I got to shoot one). Neither carries it. It is an expensive novelty, not a real carry gun. Once again, in my opinion...and in the opinion of the two buyers that I know who have bought them. :)

I prefer my S&W M25 with a 4" barrel. Holds six vice five, and shoots a bunch more accurately. No, it doesn't shoot .410s, but I can shoot snake shot out of it if I realy want to.
