YOUR gun

"... The common theme seemed to be it had to make a big boom and create a big hole. Wonder what that means about me?"

I'm not a psychologist but it sounds like you like being noticed and thought of as being someone not to mess around with.

Actually, I want people to see ME the same way!

I have 10 different types of firearms and would not say any one of them really defines me.

I do not own one yet, but one day I'll get that Colt Delta Elite chambered for 10mm. Reckon I'll add some custom grips and get a good holster for it.

Yep, that would be my signature gun! :D

I may be a little silly. If I could only own one handgun it would without a doubt be my MarkII. Nobody who knows me would ever be shocked that It's somewhere near me. My .357 is a close second.

You might consider this one it for me...

Not the one I use most, but it did influence me a bit...

Colt Python

At least I think so. Although I suspect that if I were a gun I would most likely be a holster worn Colt Official Police or a pencil barrel Model 10 Smith.

I started shooting USPSA competition with an old, G.I. .45 (not unusual in the '70s, but not so common in the late '90s). I got a lot of comments on the lanyard loop mounted to the mainspring housing. When I decided to retire the old gun, and build something specifically to suit me, I included the lanyard loop on the new gun. When everyone saw me with a new gun that also had the loop, the comments about it just kept coming.

Your ideas make perfectly good sense.....but then I have a few guns that I really like a lot ...and they speak to me....

a. a well tuned 1911 - like a Wilson Combat --- 5", Protector model in all stainless...and night sights, a mag well, etc ...in 9mm is kind of unique - but if you want it in a .45 acp thats cool too.

This one is mine ..in 9mm ....and it is coming up on 35,000 rds thru it ....and its still a great gun --- everytime I touch it.../ it is the finest gun in my safe...( better than my other Wilsons even )...

Wilson all stainless Protector 9mm.jpg

An X-Five --- especially the top end one, where you can adjust the trigger is a nice gun ....here is mine in .40S&W ...but I wish I'd bought it in 9mm...

http://thefiringline.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=38523&d=1227203177
For what its worth, I'd rank the X-Five in my top 5 guns ...but its probably # 5 and not moving up ....

A classic revolver ...like a model 27 S&W ...in 4" or a 6" barrel is the gun of my youth ...and I cannot live without at least one model 27.... Here is a 4" mod 27 in Nickel and a blued one in 6" ...the 4" Nickel brings a smile to my face, that few other guns can ...

http://thefiringline.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=78278&d=1328226262

I have on order....a Freedom Arms large frame, 5 shot, octagon barrel, in 4 3/4" in .357 mag ...with a spec'd trigger, etc...that I expect to be delivered in a week or two ....and I expect it to take a special place in my heart....( no photo yet... but google Freedom Arms photos ...) and you'll find some ...

In my safe.....my top 5 ....
1 & 2. a pair of Wilson's one in 9mm ...one in .45 acp
3. the mod 27 4" Nickel ( it took me 10 yrs to find it - in a dash 2 model)
4. a mod 29 S&W ( .44 mag ) 8 3/8" Nickel ....(the Dirty Harry Gun) ..sort of
5. Sig X-Five in .40S&W
6 - 10 ....are all S&W revolvers....model 18's (.22 ), mod 19's .357mag in nickel, model 27's 6", mod 29's 4" ....
10 - 15 ....some more 1911's ....Ed Brown, a Kimber, a Baer..../ some more Sigs in 226 9mm and .40S&W ....

Don't know where to put the new Freedom Arms ...maybe # 4 ...or #5 ...I'll let you know in about 6 months ...after I've put a few thousand rounds thru it ...

Do they define me ...or identify with my personality ....sure !!

Will you find yours ...sure ...and you'll know it when you see it ....and when you appreciate it every day you touch it ...even after you've put 30,000 rds thru it ....or maybe more....hopefully...

It changes with age. A "signature gun" at 22 years old will change at 42...52...62...

That is 'square on.' When I was twenty, it was all about magnums (686s, Pythons, Redhawks etc..). Nothing but 'Dirty Harry' type muscle guns (still love them but have outgrown my youthful zest for them shall we say).

Page forward to contemporary times--Now that I am two years away from 50:eek: I find that my so called "signature" handgun is the 1911. It is debatable as to which gun designed by the late-great John Moses Browning is in fact his greatest (literally a plethora of some of the finest guns the world has ever seen), but I was so completely awe-inspired last year during its centennial anniversary that I began to voraciously read-up on its historical significance (which still rings-true today). I found that while there are countless indelible illustrations of its undeniable and absolute contribution to the battlefield one could write an entire book, but the use of this masterpiece by one Sergeant Alvin C. York during his HEROIC stand against the Germans in WWI is perhaps the most renowned example--if you somehow are not familar with this piece of American culture and weapons history, do yourself a favor and google-it! Suffice it to say that I went out and bought my first 1911 just about one year ago and I could kick myself for not doing so earlier. When I pickup a 1911, not only does it fit like a glove and provide arguably the best SD/HD/CCW etc. defensive tool available in the world, I also feel a true sense of being an American that no other gun provides.

-Cheers

For 20+ years I've been identified with .357 Magnum and therefore wheelguns. Yes, there is the .357 SIG and the Coonan .357 Mag auto, but not for me. Most of my buddies have been more committed to a caliber rather than a particular model or brand of handgun.

There are lots of handguns that will send a .357 Magnum 125 gr. SJHP down range with devastating effect on the recipient and I have my favorites, but moreover, when I'm identified with CCWs it is the caliber, not the marque that speaks loudest.

We have gotten into 1903

Family hisotry with a sporter and a rebuild in honor of my father and has turned into a possible buy of a Mosan Nagnat as my dad got me one of those to play with (firing pin removed) when I was a kid.

YOu never know where things lead so an open mind and or circumstances and things take off.

My brother is now into 1903s and while they are not museum pieces, he has a fun collection of shooters. Some he rebuilt to period correct, some he is thinking about and one he has no idea what to do with it but its a hoot.

Just keep shooting and carrying and you will eventually find the gun that is an extension of yourself. I like smaller guns because those are the ones that become constant companions and trusted friends. Those are the ones that get customized for serious self defense.

Regardless of what your signature gun is, chances are that when you need a gun badly, your shotgun and AR will be out of reach and your match grade 1911 and your .500 mag grizzly bear stopper will be in the safe. You will have to depend on the gun that is always with you, the one that you can draw and fire accurately within a few seconds. For me, that's a small S&W or Colt revolver in blue or black. Those guns have plenty of gravitas and they make great signature guns.

Good luck Sundown.

I have no serious advice. All I can say is.... think about what you've always wanted. Something that has been elusive and desirable for many years. Then find it, and make sure it's the best one you can get.

THEN, most importantly. Shoot it, love it, get to know it, maintain it, and then it will be "your" gun.

And again. Good luck.

Maybe someday when you find it, you will let us all know:)

I've always loved the 45 acp. The first time I shot it I was hooked. It's the one caliber in my stable that will never go away. As I got older I decided chasing brass wasn't fun anymore. I solved that with a few 45 revolvers.

So I guess my signature gun is a caliber. I really don't care about the platform that's sending them down range, I like them all. :D

Just to make this a little easier, I have decided that I can do MY gun by choosing 3:
A handgun
A rifle
A shotgun.

Choosing three is much easier than finding the ONE representative. For the rifle, I know it is the M1A. That gun has always "spoken" to me, and only gun guys know what I mean by that.
For the shotgun, it is the side by side 12ga Coach gun. Again, same reason.
For the handgun, I have some choices there, but the absolute good news is :

I don't own any of these right now and I get to go shopping!!

If my wife asks why, I can just say "I gotta be me!"
