YOUR gun

Hey All!
Been thinking about something for the last few weeks, and I was wondering if anyone had gone through the same thing.
I have been involved with firearms for the last 21 years, competing in CAS and IDPA, buying and selling nearly every kind of gun out there. I've owned nearly every type of handgun from Springfield 1911's to Colt SAA's. I've had my share of rifles, from AR's to Winchester 1873's.
What I find myself looking for now is a "signature" gun. One that if you knew me and saw a picture of me with it, you would not be surprised to see it there. This little trip has taken me down some interesting roads of self-reflection, determining who I am, what I stand for, and what values I hold dear. The trick is to find a gun I feel is the physical representation of "me".
This journey is not limited to handguns, and money is not a problem, though not unlimited. I find myself looking at the guns at the LGS and wondering "Is that me?"

Anyone else been down this road? Any advice?

You'll know it when you find it.

No one that knows me ever has to ask what I'm carrying, what's on my nightstand, or in my gun cabinet.

You mean like Roland and the Thompson?

I think one needs to find a firearm that they can identify themselves with and not worry about what other folk think . Except for in Hollywood, one does not "find" or "create" an image, one lives it and those around them identify with this. Some folks buy a motorcycle to imply to others a biker image. Real bikers call them posers. Don't know what they call posers in the gun world.....

As one gets older, sometimes they just run out of 'a reason to buy a new gun'.

I went through the same as you and ended up buying a WARTHOG. :o

Just go buy a new gun without to much self-analysis. You may be happier in the end. :D

Maybe the trick is to find a gun that I like the best, then spend a few bucks on customizing and making it mine.

I don't know for sure what the answer it. For a while, I thought it might be an exotic rifle in an equally exotic caliber, but then the handgunner in me raised up and said "Hey!"

I will admit, those SIG X-5's speak to me. I think they're on the short list.

Been through quite a few "signature guns" now... people change over time, and different things become important to them. Their self-perceptions change too.

Go with the flow, and buy whatever moves you. There's plenty of others to consider when you're ready to move on.

How about "koting" (Robar, Hard Hat or such) an early DW Bobtail for a (relatively speaking) "poor man's" Valor or Ed Brown. Or beadblasting a New Vaquero or Flattop .44. I'd like to do that (latter) with my .357 Montado or .44 Sheriff, "just because," but both being limited runs have been a little reluctant. But, OTOH, they"re not 1st Gen Colts and - as they say - you can't take 'em with you. I'm repeating what someone else(s) have said, but find that one model/gun that's most tickled your fancy...the one that's your most often got-to--shooting and/or carrying, handling/fondling/admiring, whatever--whether in reality or wish list, and customize it to your heart's content.

Having thought about this a bit...

I think pretty much every gun I own can be identified as a part of mie; so to speak. I enjoy them all, and they each do the job they're intended to do. Each is used for it's own purposes.

That said, if I had to choose one to identify with, it'd have to be my original, full sized Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt. I've done a lot of tinkering with it to make it "just right" for my own tastes and purposes.

I can't imagine I'd ever sell a gun, but I only have 2.

I'm not sure you can find a gun that represents yourself, just find one that has that unknown x factor and draws you to it.

Dont think I can have a SIGNATURE GUN ,one just aint going to do it.
And those that know me would think I was crazy if I only had one So Icant
go there. Good luck.

I see guns primarily as tools.

However, I find many of them have a beauty that transcends merely the visual, but includes the function.
While some do have more eye appeal that others, I tend to use the ones that have both aspects.

Truism: There is no accounting for tastes.

Different situations (jobs) can be better handled by appropriate guns (tools). I hope to always have possession of many different guns to be able to help address different situations.

I would not expect my defensive handgun to put down a 2000 pound steer or stop a lion that escaped from the zoo. I'd reach for a major caliber rifle. Perhaps a .450 Marlin shooting a 400 gr. hard cast bullet at about 1800 FPS.

For the situation of wing shooting, a different firearm would be chosen.

I hope that you enjoy the journey. Enjoy the variety!

Well it ain't pretty and the holster looks like its been drug through the woods for a few years. Not my first choice for target shooting or self defense or what I would carry as a duty gun if I was back in uniform but its the gun I grab when I head for the woods or plan on some 100 yard shooting. It's the gun I think of when something needs some serious shooting and a shotgun or rifle aren't handy or seem to be a bit much for the job. It's one of the guns that will still be in my inventory when I finally turn room temperature. The gun was sighted in for 100 yards with my normal 240 gr Win or Mag Tech ammo from the last time I shot it. I had just gotten in a case of 300 gr double tap ammo which I had never fired before out of this gun and this was the result of 5 hurried shots in my shirt sleeves in 17 degree weather before I even bought the UPS package of ammo into the house. I guess you could say that this is my "gun" when you think of guns and me.

I like it Old grump.

But I think that pistola matchs me better then you. You ought to send it to me.

You can keep the 'pig sticker'. :p :D

It took me a while but I finally found a unique gun that really makes me stand out

The piranha gun lets people know I mean business:

Not a pig sticker, it's a target de-stapler. I have real knives for sticking in pigs. You can fight for my gun after I turn room temperature but that might be awhile. People in my family have a tendency to not die off till they get close to 90 or more if they can avoid fatal accidents. I hope you are patient, only about 20 more years to go.

20yrs!

My eyes will be so bad by then, I won't even be able to sit and look at it for enjoyment.

C0untZerO,

You can keep yours. To mean for me.

Whatever gun you feel the most comfortable with. I just got my first gun I plan to carry. I really enjoy it so far. It's my first traditional style semi-auto pistol and I will always have it. I'm getting my CC soon and I will carry this gun. It's a Magnum Research Baby Eagle. My advice, don't buy the biggest baddest gun out there. Buy the gun you enjoy. You obviously have more experience than me with guns, but I feel like almost any of my guns are my "it" guns. It isn't just one. And I never wanted to buy a gun just for that reason. When I'm an old man telling my grandkids about the stories of my guns, I'll for sure mention the cool guns but that doesn't mean I'll leave out the .22s.
