your favorit squirrel/rabbit gun

this will take small game out better than a firearm. 1977 vintage Sheridan Blue Streak... :)

11-48 .410 or Franchi 48 .20ga. for rabbits and .22 rifle w/ subsonics for squirrel. You sure have taken good care of that Sheridan, great pellet guns.
 
LT 20 1100. My first "real" shotgun. I used give the squirrels and rabbits hell with that little shotgun.:D
 
I grew up in upstate NY, so gray squirrels were the first animals I ever hunted, and squirrel hunting is still one of my favorite things to do. I always used a 20 gauge with #6 shot. I can't say I ever had excess meat damage either.

A shotgun is not very sporting although some people prefer them.

I don't entirely agree with this, mainly as I was a shotgun squirrel hunter :D Most of my shots were up into trees and I would much rather be putting #6 shot into the air than a .22, as the #6 will fall down reasonably soon, that .22 is just going to keep on going if it misses.
 
For early season squirrel hunting, when the leaves are still on the trees, I prefer a shotgun, generally a 20 gauge pump. For late season squirrels when the leaves are off the trees I prefer a .22 rimfire.

For rabbit hunting with beagles, I always use a 20 gauge pump.

Take head shots if you want to eat them

Rob228 Where in NY are you ? The first game I ever legally hunted were pheasants. Back then you had to be 14 for small game and legally couldn't go alone till you were 16. Our parents let us go around the house by ourselves before we were old enough though. As soon as we got home from school me a couple friends would grab our shotguns and coats and head out till dinner time first we would hit the fields and hedge rows for pheasants and rabbits, most days we ended up in the oaks for squirrels. We only used shotguns because we didn't see to many rabbits that wern't high tailing it. I had a 16 gauge Mossburg 500 that I got for Christmass. On the weekends it was game on for the pheasant with my father and his GSP. Unfortunatley the pheasants have all but disappeared around here. I do hunt squirrels with the .22 and .17 now
 
Pellets

Gamo Whisper (with suppressor) in .117 with replacement scope and Predator Polymags. One shot a piece. Anything less than 800-900 fps won't do the job.
 
Often use my scoped Anshultz 22rf. But, like my Ithaca 20G SxS choked skt/skt. Just as nice little gun to carry and shoot. It is fast, which is often necessary on bunnies. If the trees are tall I switch to a Beretta BL4 20g choked F/M.

and I've only hunted rabbits a few times ....but a 20ga or 28ga is plenty ...with a load of 6's .../and the few times I've gone, it was always with a 20ga or 28ga O/U Browning with a 30" barrel ( same guns I shoot for clays )....and we were hunting with a buddy's dogs...

It was fun / and tasty ....a nice crispy skin, over a bed of fried potatoes ...and a little pan gravy ...and a nice cabernet ... hard to beat ( courtesy of my buddy's wife / who is quite a chef ) ...
 
Squirrels;
Ruger 10/22 and MK-II as well as my TC .36 Seneca

Rabbits;
Stevens mod. 24, .22 over 20Ga.

I'll bet if conditions were riight, you'd eat the back side of a skunk. Just tell yourself; that it's all protein. ..... :)
Personally, I like those Tree-Rats" better than rabbit, especially the Greys ... :)

I gave up shooting rabbits with my shotgun, even with #2 lead they'd still run away after getting hit, or i just couldn't get close enough.

22 is better on the ears, the wallet,has longer range and better on the shoulder (not that that bothers me).

I use a 12 ga mostly for squirrels with #2 shot, fewer pellets and one will kill. One must learn to offset your pattern on close shots.
For rabbits I used a 12 ga and #6 shot from an improved skeet choke.
 
nutty ned ... "improved skeet choke" ... is that like a skeet in and skt out , or skt 1 and skt2? So, maybe my Winc M21 20g with skt 1 and skt 2 will be a good one for the woods and fields???? I think a squirrel or bunny would b e pleased to get taken with a M21! :p

Sorry, couldnt resist.
Lots of tools in a hunters bag, your using a sledgehammer to hang molding.

With more precision and practice you will fill your bag just as reliably with a 20 gauge or similar. Try some turkey hunting style optics (1-3x, red-dot, etc.) and pattern your chokes if your are losing game when you knew you were on.

When you start doing it with .22's you'll be at a whole different skill level; something to work towards.
