your choices of self defense firearms?

To clear a jam:

Hit mag release button.
Hook the floorplate tab of the magazine on your belt and forcibly yank the mag clear of the weapon.
Point the pistol down, place the top of the pistol slide against your body or leg.
Shove downwards three times, clearing the chamber.
Place the pistol in your holster.
Remove a fresh mag from the carrier and insert it into the pistol.
Remove the pistol from the holster and rack the slide using your leg or body.

To reload an empty pistol:
Drop the magazine.
Place the pistol into it's holster.
Remove spare mag and insert it into the pistol.
Remove pistol from holster and slip the slide release.

Of course, these pre-suppose that you are wearing a belt-mounted holster. If you are not wearing a holster that allows you to re-holster your weapon one-handed-- SHAME ON YOU-- you can substitute placing the weapon in your belt, in a Mexican Carry style (or as we call it in Texas, the Castration Carry).

2. Pump Shotgun
3. Pump Shotgun

Everyone has seen Terminator 2 correct? Besides giving me serious wood :D, Linda Hamilton showed the proper way to use a pump one handed!

I thought I'd seen it all, until a 22WMR spun a bunny 2 1/4 times in the air!

"There are people who do not mind the fact that O.J. Simpson walks free. There are people who do not mind the fact that Lon Horiuchi is not only not punished for his atrocity at Ruby Ridge, but he continues on the public payroll. There are those who know who killed Vince Foster, but are not bothered by the fact that the subject has been dropped officially. I mind those things. Do you?" - Jeff Cooper

To answer the actual question:

Springfield loaded 1911 Gov't .45.

Glock 17.

I'm currently shotgunless - I had one, then sold it, and haven't decided on it's replacement yet.

Home defense:
S&W Model 66, 4"
sometimes Remington 870, Ruger Mini-14

CCW:
S&W Model 36, 2"

"Car Defense"
S&W Model 60, .357 or Colt 1991 Commander, .45 ACP

Deep Concealment:
Raven .25
Davis .38 Derringer
NAA mini, .22 Magnum

Cap and ball revolvers are huge chunks of metal which are too big for toddlers to handle, much less cock.
Also, they're available by mail from Dixie Gun Works and others, and relatively inexpensive.
A very good solution to the "how much bang for the buck" question.
