Young gun owner with some quite possibly stupid questions

The reason I'm wary about this is that every used revolver I've ever seen has been around the 400$ range.

I can see your point if this is the case. $400 is about what a new Ruger GP 100 would go for around here. You should look around other places for used guns. I bought a S&W Mod 28-2 for $250. A new S&W of any kind would probably run about $500 so I got it for half price. That's the kind of deal I'm talking about. The guy I bought it from also had a used Colt Trooper MkIII for $400 and it sat in the case for a loooooong time.

I recently bought two model 19's and a model 10 from gander for $150 to $190. the 19's were less money but that was based on condition. the model 10 3 inch HB was in excellent condition, and the manager had gotten way too many of them for his location. Look around and also understand this. the prices at many pawn shops are CLEARLY sucker prices and a informed and cash carrying shopper will get that gun at often half price or close to it.

we were looking for a Fender Strat for my son and the local pawn shop had a mid grade one priced as if it were played by Stevie Ray himself. ten minutes of talking got that 400 dollar retail guitar marked down from 800 to 175 including a strap, a marshall mini amp, and the cord. It was as new, and the guy at the counter said it was there and marked that way because you never know who is willing to pay for nothing.

I like my Taurus Titanium .38 special. Nice blue finish to.

Oh, NO gun should be your LAST gun, their like tools, there isn't one you don't need.:)

Gun-Tests Magazine raved about the S&W 60-18 J-frame in its Sept 05 issue, and they are an independent testing source. (A subscription is well worth the money, by the way. It's the one monthly mag I most look forward to, even when they're reviewing gun categories outside my sphere of regular interest.) Even comparing it to the 686, which they love, they found the 60-18 accuracy superlative.
The gun has a 5" barrel which I think you'd want in any range gun, and 5" for home defense would be fine, too. (I'd want much shorter for personal carry myself and would look to a completely different gun for that, but that wasn't what you were describing.) GT did recommend changing out the wood grips for Pachymar Decelerators, but overall, this was about as enthusiastic a review as it could be.
