you just cant make this stuff up...

Felt compelled to create a thread & share a surreal experience today at my local gun shop where I overheard a VERY concerning conversation....went something like this between 3 knuckleheads who looked to be in their 20's....

(kid #1 picks up a box of HORNADY ZombieMax and looks at his friend)

(kid #1 to kid #2)
"wait what....this stuff is ACTUAL zombie ammo?"
"Look it says right on the box its for shooting zombies or whatever..."

(kid #2 laughs & shrugs and moves about looking at guns)

(kid gets attention of the OWNER of the store who is a complete smartass to idiots who come in asking dumb questions, and always has something funny to say when the refer to mags as CLIPS)

(kid)
"Excuse me....why does this stuff say its for killing zombies...is it for real?"

(Owner to kid)
"Yeah, why? Are you having an issue with zombies near your house"

Kid looks at the man with a puzzled face, by now all 3 kids are not quite sure what to make of it.

(kid)
"no but...I mean if this stuff is legit I guess it cant hurt to be prepared right?"

(owner)
"absolutely. listen those are our last 8 boxes in 9mm....if I were you I'd grab them all before we run out."

The kid looks at the owner.....still not quite sure but feels somewhat re-assured by his advice....and agrees to the purchase!!! WOWWWWW - Darwin Award goes to this kid!

The kid might be stupipd but I'm thinking you maybe misunderstand the "Darwin Award". The Darwin Award goes to people who kill themselves doing something stupid. Buying something stupid doesn't qualify.

However, if the owner did as you say, he'd get my Dirtball of the Month Award with a Feces Emblem for Liar added. Someone being uniformed/ignorant doesn't give you the right to lie to them so you can have their money.

Nah, I use that term loosely in reference to natural selection....aka wishful thinking about thinning the herd, etc.

Yupp, this kid was buying actual ammo for an actual gun. I dont blame the owner one bit....that was an easy sale

I just couldnt believe me ears today. Completely surreal & 100% SCARY.

It sounds both sad and scary... from both sides of the counter. Oh well, it takes all kinds to fill them new openings, don't it.

^^^^ what Brian said x2.

If he were an honest salesman he would have taken the time to educate and to take advantage of them. If you don't want to do that maybe it's time for a change of career.

Maybe the kids read this on Yahoo and wanted to be prepared.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Move over vampires, goblins and haunted houses, this kind of Halloween terror aims to shake up even the toughest warriors: An untold number of so-called zombies are coming to a counterterrorism summit attended by hundreds of Marines, Navy special ops, soldiers, police, firefighters and others to prepare them for their worst nightmares.

"This is a very real exercise, this is not some type of big costume party," said Brad Barker, president of Halo Corp, a security firm hosting the Oct. 31 training demonstration during the summit at a 44-acre Paradise Point Resort island on a San Diego bay. "Everything that will be simulated at this event has already happened, it just hasn't happened all at once on the same night. But the training is very real, it just happens to be the bad guys we're having a little fun with."

Hundreds of military, law enforcement and medical personnel will observe the Hollywood-style production of a zombie attack as part of their emergency response training.

In the scenario, a VIP and his personal detail are trapped in a village, surrounded by zombies when a bomb explodes. The VIP is wounded and his team must move through the town while dodging bullets and shooting back at the invading zombies. At one point, some members of the team are bit by zombies and must be taken to a field medical facility for decontamination and treatment.

"No one knows what the zombies will do in our scenario, but quite frankly no one knows what a terrorist will do," Barker said. "If a law enforcement officer sees a zombie and says, 'Freeze, get your hands in the air!' What's the zombie going to do? He's going to moan at you. If someone on PCP or some other psychotic drug is told that, the truth is he's not going to react to you."

The keynote speaker beforehand will be a retired top spook — former CIA Director Michael Hayden.

"No doubt when a zombie apocalypse occurs, it's going to be a federal incident, so we're making it happen," Barker said. Since word got out about the exercise, they've had calls from "every whack job in the world" about whether the U.S. government is really preparing for a zombie event.

Guys, Im not sure where you are from.....maybe its just a Philly attitude thing....

But if a person looks you in the eyes, and is even SLIGHTLY serious and inquiring about ammo for killing zombies....I dont know about you but that opens the flood gates for criticism. A sale is a sale.

Sure he could have easily explained to the kid it was a fun/cheesy marketing angle but cmon....a situation like that is begging for a laugh

Me personally, I was in the process of putting a sweet new Springfield on layaway and absorbed every second of it and had to process the convo for a minute....YIKES!

@ Egor WOW thats just.....WOW

How does "opening the flood gates for criticism", which is in itself a foolish attitude for a person in business, rise to the level of lying for profit?

It's not a Philly thing, it's a moral thing. It's wrong to lie to people and it's doubly wrong to do it for profit.

If that owner did that in my presence, I would not only inform the kids of the truth but I'd inform the owner that it would be the last time he'd ever see me in his store.

Brian: all due respect...nobody "lied". He simply ran with it.

Ill be honest I was a bit shocked and taken back that the owner went along for the ride so freely and made a ammo sale out of it....but this kid needed a reality check. Stupid is stupid. He wasnt asking gun safety advice or something that required an honest, professional response. I think deep down he kinda "knew" that zombies werent real because he was smiling at the owner while asking the questions.....but he still acted REMOTELY serious with his inquiries.

Listen take it for what it is. I am not the morality police, I thought it was absolutely hilarious and shocking. I tried not to stare but couldnt help it. My jaw dropped!

He did lie.

"Is this stuff for real?"

"Yeah, why?"

That's a lie. It's not "for real" in the context that you lay out the story. Yeah, it's real ammo. Yeah, it's for real guns. No, it's not for real zombies, which the store owner was clearly implying.

Obviously we weren't there and you're now "sterilizing" the story by adding doubt implying that somehow you know the kid knew.

None of that jives with the way you originally presented the story.

You keep saying things like "this kid needed a reality check" and the situation was "begging for a laugh", both of which might be true... and neither of which happened.

The kid got taken for a ride, scammed. He didn't get a reality check or educated or even a good laugh at his expense. He got lied to and scammed.

I'm not surprised stupid stuff like this is happening to be honest.

Until a couple months ago I was working at the central distribution Center for Midwestern-regional sporting goods store McSports. I said something critical about the zombie ammo to my boss, a retired cop and a man whose very near retirement; he opened the box and said, with a bewildered look on his face "this is just .223?" I said, "we'll it does have a different color tip!" He chuckled a bit with me but honestly he seemed confused at the point of this "z-max" stuff; frankly, I am too.

Just thought i'de lighten the mood a bit...

Doesn't sound as though this is a guy I'd like to do business with. I'm sure at one time or another, this 'guru of guns' was just as ignorant about guns as many he today gets smart with...and makes his living off of.

His response to these young people makes me wonder just whom the 'idiot' really is.

Completely surreal & 100% SCARY.

And with emphasis on SCARY.

I guess that's a culture up there that would take some getting used to. So exactly who (what expertise level) up there or in the firearms world in general meets your approval?

Phil-USN, I can see where you got a laugh, but I still agree with Brian.

Would I have had some fun with the kid? Probably. But, I would have educated him before he left the shop. I would not have convinced him to buy 8 boxes on a false premise.

Brian's right, the dealer is a jerk.

So, this kid goes home and shows this ammo to someone else who DOES clue him into the facts about zombies. Now this shopowner has lost a customer for life. Yeah, that's really smart on his part.

Frankly, whenever I see an ad for zombie ammo, or an online circular from any of the big outfits ( I know you get these too, you know who I'm talking about) with zombies in the ad, I just delete the whole thing. I'm really getting tired of the zombie crap. Maybe once Halloween is past, all of this will just go away. I sincerely hope so. :(

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one... "The Walking Dead" is one of the most popular shows on TV. I have no idea why, as it's just one long splatter fest... but I guess I'm not the optimum demographic. :D
