You Have $200 For a PD Pistol AND Ammo, read on....

We talk a lot here about $500 plus pistols, generally pouring scorn on pistols at the bottom end of the market to the extent that I wonder if some people are a little embarassed about asking how to go about getting some protection for themselves and their family on minimum wage. While I accept that most people with PC's are likely to have a few bucks to spare, you never know so here goes anyway.

OK, here's the deal, you have a wife, 3 kids + dog and $200, and that's it. You are not allowed to sell any members of your family to raise extra revenue (sorry Kentucky

)and the dog stays no matter what. You live in a part of town where you are more likely to need a weapon than most other people so the choice must be sound.

Your $200 limit is for everything, gun, ammunition, cleaning materials, holster if you want one. Beyond that, there are no restrictions, you can go new or used, spend on fancy hollowpoints or get 50 of the crudiest reloaded LRN's you can find, clean it with an old toothbrush and 3 in 1 oil or get the full Hoppes range, the choice as they say, is yours.

I'll post my selections if there's enough interest in the topic. For anyone reading this thread who is faced with just such a choice, I hope that what follows proves to be of practical use to you.

Regards,

Mike H

I would say a good Makorov could be had for less than $200 w/ammo and would be an OK choice.
I also would suggest a used .38 special, there are plenty of these around that you could have for that price.
If it didn't have to be a handgun the Mossberg 500 shotgun would be a consideration.
I'm sure there are other (maybe better) choices, but that's my 2 cents.

I would buy a Makarov, in fact when I was in the Army and had no money that is exactly what I did. paid $150 for the gun new, it goes bang every time and puts lead on target. Best bang for the buck around, not crap like hi-point, jennings, ect.

I would haunt the Pawn Shops and find a good used stainless steel Rossi 5 shot .38 special. I would buy that and a 50 round box of Federal Hydrashocks and a decent holster and a cleaning rod and gun oil and bore cleaner. If I had any money left I would pick up a couple of HKS speed loaders for a Model 60 Smith, because they work in the Rossi.

I'd go with either a Makarov or a used revolver. I can get a new Bulgarian Makarov for about $140 or a used Rossi 68, .38spl, 3" barrel revolver for $99 (the ones SOG sells, believe they came from a foreign country police force). I'd prefer the Mak, as its new compared to a used revolver.

I would be hard pressed between two choices:
1) A Makarov, w/the assorted accessories it
comes with.
2)A used .38 and assorted ammo.

I was thinking my local pawn shop had used S&W police revolvers for $175 - $200

a used Ruger speed six might also fall into that range

you could do a lot worse than to get a heavy duty service revolver (and a box of ammo from walmart)

I concur with others and propose a Makarov. Last of the new unissued military Bulgies going for $147 delivered from www.jcarmory.com Say you pay your FFL $20 for the transaction, buy an Uncle Mikes IWB for $12 and get 3 boxes of Russian ammo at $7 each and you're at $200 for a pistol, holster and three boxes of ammo. To make it comfortable for carry grind down the lanyard ring and you're all set.

I for one don't think that there exists a direct relationship between price and quality and reliability. A Mak may not be pretty, but like an AK, it's extremely reliable.

Makarov! At $200 or at any price. It's accurate, dependable, reliable, trustworthy, faithful, unerring, unfailing, infallible, certain, sure and once again... accurate.

Ohhhh did I mention that as far as I'm concerned there has never been a finer pistol made at any price? And with the 109 grain fast ammo from Russia it compares very well to the 9mm parabellum in a similar short barrel.

I would cast my vote with the Makarov. This picture is of a Russian military surplus piece; the Bulgarian pistols that are available look the same except for the frame markings. Either a Bulgarian military surplus or commercial offering (the commercial pistol will have the word "ARSENAL" on the slide) can be had very reasonable - I bought mine (a milsurp) for $140, included was a flap field holster, cleaning tool, lanyard & 2 mags. Imported non-corrosive imported ammo is available for as low as $5.25 for 50 rounds & it shoots good. Corbon, Hornady, & I believe CCI are now producing hollowpoint defensive rounds in this caliber (9x18). Although not considered a "true Makarov" by enthusiasts, this pistol can also be found in .380 (9x17), however it is generally considered less powerful than the 9x18.

Mine has yet to hiccup with the surplus ammo, I haven't tried hollowpoints yet but hear they feed without issue. The red plastic grips can be replaced with a very nice Hogue-type from Pearce Grips for $15 to $20. Although it looks like a Walther & take down is the same, the Makarov has about 1/2 as many parts. Both the double-action trigger pull & decocker/safety are stiff when new, but after about 200 rounds things smooth up very nicely. Single action pull is better, but again smoothes out after use.

Yep - I guess you can tell I'm a fan..but with good reason. This is a robust little gun & about the best value on the market today.

I can't argue much with the suggestions already expressed, but here are a couple of other options to consider:

1) A Hungarian FEG PA63. These generally sell for a little less than the Makarovs, and are more pleasing to my eye (they look like a Walther PP). I also like the thumb-operated magazine release and the lighter weight due to the aluminum frame. I bought one in like-new condition recently for $120 with four magazines. Shot it for the first time today. It worked fine.

2) Consider something like a Browning Buckmark or Ruger 22/45 .22 caliber pistol. A friend of mine recently bought a new Buckmark Camper for $162 new (on sale). Granted, the .22LR isn't very powerful for self defense, but ammo is so inexpensive compared with any centerfire (maybe 1/10th the cost) that it is much more likely that someone on a budget will practice with it enough to hit what they shoot at. Also, they are less likely to be afraid of the recoil and noise of a .22. I think these pistols are much easier to shoot accurately (I shot a friends Buckmark today, and we easily hit cans at 2-3 times the distance we could with my PA-63). Just something to think about.

O.k., o.k., Let's see, I'd opt for either a Bulgarian Makarov or if ammo selection in poor in my town, a Bersa .380. Both are well under $200 and capable, if not ideal, defensive pistols.

I agree with 7th Fleet; a good used 5-shot
Rossi model 68 in stainless, loaded with
Federal Hydra-Shok's. Probably at top's,
around $150.00; enough left over to buy
some dog food and the kid's an ice cream
cone!!!

I agree with MakAttack, Get the Makarov you can't go wrong. I got my E. German from SOG for $159. handpicked. Also the cleaning kit can be had for about $4. If I remember I bought Russian ammo for about $5. per 50 round box. The stuff shoots real well.

Hope this helps

Yes - I forgot about these & should have mentioned them. Should say though, replacement mags are hard to come by & can be more expensive than on a Makarov (Mak mags are widely available for $5 or even less), & there aren't any grip options to speak of. But they are (from what I have heard) very decent & reliable shooters.

Let me join the Makarov chorus. I have one and it really is all the other guys have said about it. Go to Makarov.com to read EVERYTHING about this pistol. Get the phone number for Dan's Sporting Goods in Pennsylvania and order a brand new one in cosmoline and a 500 round case of ammo for your $200. These things are quality handguns, not cheap junk, just simple Russian design. Very accurate, easy to clean , amazingly inexpensive ammo.

A couple of others Davis P380 Reliable, fairly accurate, lifetime warrenty.5 shots and have used HP in mine, without Jam. No +P ammo though.
Berssa 380 Thunder all the safety features,
can pick up used for $150 or less. Will shoot +p HP ammo,7 rounds, Accurate, reliable and can carry locked and cocked. also you could still use warrenty.

The ammo is scarce in my town argument against the Mak doesn't hold water. With one phne call you can get new production Russian ammo delivered for $105/1000 or $52/500 from Dan's Sporting. If you prefer you can send him a check.
