You guys are comfortable eating deer meat??

I havent bought hamburger meat in years.. All we eat is deer meat.. Just last night we ate a deer roast.. the processing is cheap and 2 deer last my wife and I a year. or till next season..

Recent studies comparing CWD to BSE (mad cow) stumbled upon the fact that the offending prions are present in skeletal muscles, as well.
Very interesting. That is the first I'd heard of that.

After reading some of the articles, it seems that the infectivity is much less in non-neural tissue than in neural tissue. One article quantified the infectivity as being 10,000 to 100,000 times less.

So you are correct. To completely avoid prions, one must avoid eating deer. However, one can eat deer and still reduce the chances of being infected significantly by avoiding contact with neural tissue.

I really wish i hadnt read this topic, to late now. I have only hunted small game up to now, and was going to take my first deers this season. Here in Indiana we can take one buck and one doe, i was excited about the season.

Now that I have read this topic, i am having second thoughts. I looked up VCJD and CJD, Which is the human version of CWD. You can get vCJD from eating these prions and It is a quick and absolutely horrid death. I dont want to die that way.

Right now i hunt rabbits with my beagel(god i love their bay) and am learning to put up snares for squirels. I will continue to hunt them and enjoy them, but i currently dont think i will be able to eat a deer knowing that this is right around the corner and no matter which part of the deer you eat, your still screwed.

I may be being way over paranoid about it, and ill ask my vetinarian and the dnr about what they say, and hopefully its not a problem here.

I hate that i feel this way, i was so looking forward to bagging my first deers.
I have a nice inline muzzle loader and everything... tobad i wont be able to use it for anything untill i can determine if my local herd is safe.

Mordis, you can take all the deer you want, there isn't a runaway virus or bug infesting your herd. It's a statistic fact that you probably will never hear of a case in your area. Harvest one this year and enjoy!!:) You can't grow old worrying about what might happen down the road, meanwhile your missing out on some absolutely fantastic eating dude!!:p BTW, if your in Missouri,,, ZERO CASES OF CWD!!!!

Ever hear of Tularemia (aka Rabbit Fever)? Or how about domestic meats contaminated with E. Coli, Salmonella, or Trichinosis? Perhaps not prion infections but still no picnic. Any animal, either domestic or wild can cause you to get sick. If your area is not a CWD heavy area, don't stress about and go bag yourself some deer!

Ha ha. That wasn't the point (but maybe that's what he took away from it) but that wild game is no more of a bigger risk than supermarket meat.

Well, i dont buy supermarket meat. I get my meat from a butcher who uses localy grown cows, that are guaranteed free of implants, injections and other crap. Costs a whole lot more, but worth the effort.

Im aware of the other deseases you have mentioned. I have my Vetinarian/hunting partner inspect all meat we take before we finish processing it. Trichinosis, im aware of becuase it is common in chickens and i raise chickens. I keep my flock segregated from other birds and fowl. My chick supplier also is very reputable and has a good record healthy chicks.

Im not oppossed to eating meat. My family consumes alot of chicken and i got them to offset my meat/egg costs.

Now having said all that, im willing to go deer hunting this year, if i can find a close local place that will do tests to see if the meat is safe to eat or not. Im sure my vet will be able to tell me. Tho he sends all his samples to Purdue for testing and it takes along time to recieve results.

I have been eating White Tail Deer Venison, and Feral Hog my whole life, and have had no problems.
My wife makes the best meat loaf, you could ever eat out of ground venison.
Its delicous, with a thick ketchup batter on top, and some onion slices in it.
We add a little beef talor to keep it from drying out too much, but man is it good.
We also make Mexican Cornbread out of it, and not to mention when we Mix Wild Hog, and Deer to make Smoked Sausage links. I cant wait till season gets here, Im getting hungry.:D

This will be our first year to hunt game for meat in quite a few years but I am really looking forward to deer season this year. I can't wait for some chili and sausage with venison meat!

Dude, I just grilled deer-burger, and backstraps, and they were beyond perfection!:DSo I typing this keyboard just fat as a tick on deer meat!!:p:)
