Yikes...Statue of Liberty

Wait, wait, wait....So let me get this straight..as you approach the Lincoln Tunnel during a RED colored terror alert day...and when you see the multiple signs saying TRUCKS & VANS WILL BE RANDOMLY SEARCHED and as you approach the cop with the machine gun pointing at your vehicle to pull over. I give him the finger, and I give all the other cops and soldiers the finger, then I give the the soldier with M-2 .50 a big finger and I just keep going....nothing happens right??? If so then behind me Mr. Al Qaeda does the same thing, drives into the tunnel and sets off his charge and everyone drowns. No if you don't stop after numerous warnings, your vehicle is turned into swiss cheese. Just to easy your minds the cops are profiling. You pull over, says "Hi where you going", He sees your an American and your not holding a switch and there are no 55 gallon drums of fuel and fertlizer, and your gone in less than a minute. They are not going thru your stuff and your not getting stripped searched. Its the same thing our guys are doing in Iraq. Set up a roadblock and 99% of the people have a purpose of traveling thru, but your looking for the that 1%, the guy that is all nervous with the RPG and 10 AK-47s in the trunk. I went to the Statue of Liberty in 2000 WITH a 3" folding knife in my pocket the whole time, There was absolutely no screening or security from the Jersey ferry before 9/11 (I never took the Battery Park NYC ferry so it might have been more strict there). They are not trying to violate the rights of US citizens, but they are trying to deter, catch, and hopefully kill terrorist. Unfortuately liberal politicans force law enforcement to be PC and do this random search stuff, but some are thankfully bending the rules and profiling. If the entire middle east fell off the map, and everyone in Al Qaeda died of AIDS, we will never need to take are shoes off at the airport or go thru a metal detector to see the Statue of Liberty.

I thought the discussion was about current restrictions, which apparently do prohibit 3" folding knives at the Statue of Liberty. What happened to you when you visited the Statue over 5 years ago is irrelevant to the present situation.

Alert level red is essentially martial law under a different name. That's a different situation, whether it's constitutional or not.

tyme,

I think mikeyboy was actually bemoaning the fact that he wasn't searched and kept from carrying his 3" folder up into Lady Liberty. Anybody could have done just the same. Apparently, it's safer now.

There's no clearer way to say "I value government-promised safety more than I value my freedom."

Freedom of what??? The ability to bring a boxcutters on to an airplane???the freedom to carry explosives when I visit a monument???

Yes, I value what the Government has done so far. Has there been another attack on US soil??? No. Sure the administration and intelligence screwed up on Iraq and catching Bin Laden, but for the most part they have stopped further attacks here, and they have shared some intelligence they have found about al Qaeda with law enforcement and other parties that are threatened. You see when they find pictures and plans to attack the Statue of Liberty in a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan, Security there goes up. I hate to disappoint you all but here is another example, have you ever been to Independence Hall in Philadelphia??? If you seen National Treasure you seen what it was like before 9/11. You could just walk right in from multiple entrances, heck before 9/11 you could drive a truck right up to one of its brick walls and park and no one would tell you to move for probably an hour. Now there is only one entrance in, you do go thru a metal detectors, and there are concrete pillars along the sidewalks so a vehicle cannot get close. WHY??? because there was a set of photos and plan for Independence Hall found in Afghanistan. Plans and pictures of Bridges and Tunnel around NYC where also found in Afghanistan. Understand al Qeada took advantage of loopholes. They knew they could get on plane with small knives and boxcutters before 9/11, now that loophole is closed. They tried to send a guy with a shoebombs to down an airplane, now we get our shoes checked when we get on an airplane, and that loophole is closed. Do you want no security??? Would you rather have the Statue of Liberty and Independence Hall Destroyed??? Would you fly on an airplane if no one were checked??? I do not want another terrorist attack on US soil, and I want my enemy DEAD. If I am INCONVIENCED, so that my enemy cannot complete an attack, I am OK with it.

If Richard Reid had packed his rectum with C4 instead of his shoes, would you so willingly submit to a cavity search prior to boarding your flight? ;)

Yep. In a minute. Would you fly on an airplane if everyone were issued a louisville slugger?

The only reason why those guys were able to hijack the 9/11 planes was because of the federally mandated disarmament of airline passengers.

Government comes along, breaks both your legs, and hands you a set of crutches. You then hobble on down the street and happily shout: "Thank you! Without government, I wouldn't be able to walk!"

Jiminy Cricket. No wonder our freedoms have gone down the toilet.

Yes, the freedom to bring boxcutters on to a plane, and the freedom to get stabbed and beaten (and perhaps even shot) if you attempt to use boxcutters against anyone else on the plane.

The only reason why those guys were able to hijack the 9/11 planes was because of the federally mandated disarmament of airline passengers.
Planes full of seat cushions, blankets, pillows, and hard plastic tray tables that could probably be ripped off the seatbacks, and a bunch of hoodlums with small weapons encounter resistance on only one of four planes? I'm not sure who or what disarmed so many people of the fire in their hearts, but I don't think it was the government.

tyme - When the government removes the trust that it once had in people on the right to defend themselves, it effectively removes any hope that they will be defended for doing what is right. It removes the "fire in their hearts" when they know that they can be treated like a criminal when they defend themselves and their fellow passengers. It is disheartening to have a government who will not stand behind you and would rather stand behind the criminals.

I dont think the airplane hijack bit is going to work after 9/11. If there are 2 terrorists and 50 people on a plane your probably going to be stuck in the line to attack him. Its gonna be a slobberknocker of a fight.

If the terrorists wanted to attack the Statue of Liberty, I dont think they are going to stop for the body search.

When the government removes the trust that it once had in people on the right to defend themselves, ...
Some of the most oppressive regimes in history have done this and worse, yet the majority of the people retained the spirit of resistance.

I wasn't fair to the memories of some people... a few were injured before the three planes crashed into their targets, and Daniel Lewin was killed almost immediately for some reason. (I find it rather hard to accept that he was killed so quickly with a box cutter, but that's the official story, and the AA memo about him being shot is apparently a mistake, and anyway my 9/11 musings are offtopic so...)

tyme - People will still go along with a government so long as it hasn't totally offended them. The difference with between ours and an oppressive government is that we still have people able to change things in a peacable manner. In an oppressice regime you have the resistance of the people to it.

We can still turn it around in time. By the time a resistance has formed, its usually to late for a peacably assembled people to fis the problem. We, as Americans, will always maintain the spirit of resistance (I hope). It's not necessarily about a resistance movement. We still have the chance to fix things properly and without bloodshed.

Our government is not oppressive, it just tends to be run by the PC. Remember: We put them into office and we can take them out of it to.

This was even though I was and never do carry anything that won't go through a metal detector. After all, D.C. is a pretty safe place but it was the principle of the thing.

D.C. ranks among the murder capitals of the country! What are you talking about, "D.C. is a pretty safe place"?! :barf:

There's no such thing as a "safe place," anyway. Nothing about a place makes it safe. At any time, any criminal can turn a formerly "safe place" into a place of carnage and mayhem.

Now, as far as the Statue of Liberty goes... If terrorists wanted to destroy it, and they had access to the C-4 that they no longer can bring on the ferry (thanks to the wonderful security rules on the lines there), all they would have to do is get themselves a Cessna and load it up with the explosives, and fly it on up the Hudson.

There are VFR corridors around the area. A general aviation pilot could get clearance to travel up the Hudson. (As far as I am aware, this is still doable and the Temporary Flight Restriction over the area has been lifted. I'd have to check with my dad, who flies in the area, to be sure.) Once near the statue, he could divert and head on over to it, and detonate as he impacts the base of it, right? There ain't no way that they're going to get an air-to-air missile from an F-16 in time for him to cover maybe a mile or so at 100kts. This is more of the b.s. "security" they've been giving us in exchange for our rights for years now. Everyone be good little sheeple and pretend that you can't see the gaping holes. Everyone pretend that you believe the authorities can swoop in at any moment and any location and save the day before a determined psychopath can do what he wants to do.
