Yet ANOTHER "First Gun" question...

A good learning gun is the good old mosin nagant. Under $100 amd cheap to shoot and maintain. You will learn to control a full power rifle and along the way learn a bit about proper surplus cleaning, bedding, and trigger work. The mosin is also very rewarding to shoot and all of our mosin ring the 300 yds consistently with iron sights

Lurch,
What I meant was a mistake in upkeep/maintenance.
Like say, using the wrong substance to clean/oil, a part breaking, etc.

I certainly didn't mean 'Mistakes' like negligent discharges, or ANYTHING involving the actual operation of the firearm.

I guess what I'm saying is it wouldn't break the bank if it were made inoperable by user stupidity or mechanical failure.

Understood...and I didn't mean to infer that you are or would be careless. Now on to your question, I think any good bolt action or semi-auto .22 in your price range would be a great first firearm.

Marlin vs Savage

I recently was debating on a cheap 22, It was between the Savage 64 and the Marlin 795. Every You Tube video I saw on the Savage 64 was negative. Seems as though the right ammo was imperative, or there would be numerous jams. I ended up picking up the Marlin 795; even with all the negative posts, I found I made the right choice. No jams no issues, and very accurate as far as 100 yards. I know they aren't the easiest to clean, but I'd definately suggest. If you have any cleaning issues, cause any accidental damage, they only a little over $100; so no great loss. The site's stunk tho.

hm

i have to be honest and say that i haven't read everyone else's comments yet, but i think the answer to your question lies in - what you plan to do with the gun, how you plan to use it, what you envision it doing in the long run..

what i mean is:

is it going to sit in a gun safe?
is it going to sit in a wall safe?
is it going to sit on your night stand?
are you going to keep it in your pocket while you're walking around your house or doing yard work?
is it going to be your CHL gun to carry in public?
Are you planning to hunt with it?
How often do you plan to shoot it?

all of those things play a big part..

for my first pistol, i opted for a Ruger LCP 380... because i keep it by my night stand next to the shotgun, and i carry it around my property with me, and am in the process of getting a CHL, and it fits really nicely in your pocket without imprinting.

BUT... it's not a good "going to the range" gun.... you'll rub your fingernail off after about 20 rounds on the trigger guard... 50 is about all i can do at a time..

for a range gun, 9mm is the way to go (some agree some don't) because 9mm seems to be the cheapest ammo, and is a big enough gun to have fun, small enough to carry, great all purpose weapon typically speaking..

with that said, my next one will be a 1911...
