XD vs. M&P vs. Glock in .40 S&W only, best one?

Going through some threads I'm subscribed to, I noticed a few months ago I asked the same question in this thread's title except for the .45 ACP only. I thought I'd start a thread using the .40 S&W round only.

Of the three models above, only the M&P was designed from the get-go for the .40 S&W. The XD was originally designed for the 9mm. The Glock was designed for the 9mm as well for generations 1 through 3. However, I read something along the lines that the Glock Gen. 4 in .40 was designed especially for the .40 S&W.

Subjectively, and IMO, I've shot all 3 in both .40 S&W and 9mm and my preference is Glock in both cases.

I get along best with the Glock trigger out of the 3, and I felt the Glock (specifically the 23) handled the snappy recoil of the .40 better than the XD and M&P.

YMMV, of course.

I've owned several Glocks in 40 and one XD. My only experience with the M&P was a 45. The Glock works for me and while it may not have been designed for the 40 from the ground up it is also the most proven. While there has been a recent shift to 9mm, the Glock 22 has been carried by more LE since the mid-90's than all other 40 S&W pistols combined. With that many guns out there there are bound to be a few problems come up.

Our local county PD, SO, State Fish and Game as well as the GSP went with G-22's twenty years ago. The GSP gave the 45 GAP a short run and are now with G-17's. All others are still using G-22's. I have a lot of contacts with the local LE and they have had zero problems the last 20 years.

Doesn't mean the others are bad. I just don't care at all for the XD design, but the M&P especially in 40 appears to be a good gun. There were a lot of things I liked about the 45 I had. The 9mm M&P's have had some problems.

Haven't fired the XD but I have fired the Glocks and have a M&P 40. They both do the job as I am sure the XD does as well. Out of the three, I would go with the one that feels best in your hand.

This is good info. Thanks.

I have owned all of them.

I would say M&P handles the 40 the best. I'm not much of a fan of 40 these days anyways, but if I had to take one it would be the M&P 40.... followed by the Glock 22/23.

In .40 I have owned A G23, G22. and a shield .40, the G23 was the best by a wide margin due to size/payload, and handling and like a Idiot I let it get away, I will buy another and mod it just like my G19 as soon as I can,but I just picked up a pistol that I feel can match it and has better ergonomics for my hand than the G 23,,,, the SR40 Ruger, I have only put 50 rounds through this pistol and I'm still becoming friends with its trigger but I'm already shooting very tight groups with it and love how it shoots and handles and it eats recoil pretty good too.

this is the first time out with it and by the end of 50 rounds the groups where getting small, the numbers by the holes sre the distance they were shot from in yards, I still need to fine tune the sights and run a couple hundred rounds through it for function and reliability checks before it gets a carry holster but I'm confident it will shine.

I have a S&W .40 Sigma and a XDm in .40 as well. I prefer the Xdm over the S&W. Both fit my hand, but because I can change the backstrap on the XD it is just a little better. I also prefer the trigger on the XD over the S&W which has a very long pull before it goes off. The XD is a little heavier, but not by much.
Just my $.02.

Shoot Safe and Often

I trust all three to work without issue, but I personally prefer the M&P with Glock coming in a close second and the XD a distant third. The recoil and accuracy are about the same between the M&P40 and Glock 22. The only reason the M&P wins out over the Glock is the M&P just feels better to me.

IMO, XD is the clear leader due to trigger pull quality, stock sights, grip texture, slide serrations, loaded/cocked indicators, magazine quality and grip safety. It really is the upgraded Glock.

Glock is still good in second. Buy new sights, smooth the trigger and it will the job done.

M&P.... worthless to me....unshootable trigger.

Not to mention, the last XD was a 1 hole group shooter at 15 yards! I'm not even that good.

It's always so interesting to me how people gauge trigger quality. I mean, we know it's all subjective..... but I absolutely hate the XD and even XDM trigger - even with the match trigger kits from PRP and Springer. It's nice and smooth. The trigger face actually feels good, but the fact that it has no distinguishable break point is just a huge deal breaker for me. There is no wall. It just rolls right through. And reset is pretty long, even with the upgraded kits.

The M&P trigger has gone through a lot of transition. Originally, they were remarkably bad. The take up was very gritty. The break was decent, but heavy. And the reset was totally non-existent. S&W has made a number of changes to the trigger over the years and these days the factory trigger isn't as bad as it used to be. It actually has a decent reset and the trigger pull isn't as gritty as it used to be. However, it can still be improved. With the Apex Tactical trigger kits, the M&P has - to me - the very best striker fired trigger on the market. It beats any trigger available for Glock. It beats the P320 and VP9 - to include my custom P320 trigger work performed by Robert Burke(highly recommended). The Apex trigger components make it about as close as you can get to a 1911 without the gun being.... a 1911.

I'm not saying any of this to argue, just pointing out how very different our perceptions of what makes a trigger 'good' can be. :p

Yea I can't shoot this crappy M&P to save my life! Look at these horrible results!

Maybe I should just sell this hunk of junk...

I've owned at least one variation of the XD, M&P, and Glock. The XD is gone just because it never really grew on me. Good shooter, kinda eh on the trigger. I've still got the M&P. Only thing I've done to it is throw a Apex trigger in it. I like it a lot actually. The Glock's I've had are gone. The grip is not comfortable for me at all. Trigger was ok but it just didn't fit me. Now, I do have a couple Sigs on the other hand in .40 that I absoluetly love! (P229SAS DAK and P250C) Granted those are completely different in function but they have taken over the roles that any Glock would fill for me.

Agreed, I don't care for XD triggers or their balance for that matter.

To your first point, even with the newer Apex kits, I still prefer a stock Glock trigger (not to mention any upgrades) to an M&P trigger. To each their own.

Strangely enough after enough shooting with the Glock, I've even started to prefer the Glock ergonomics to "better" designs such as Sig, M&P or CZ. It doesn't make sense, as I'll easily say that those are more ergonomic designs, but somehow my preferences have changed in the past 2 years.

Thanks Uncle. My M&P opinion was formed a couple years ago. I'll have to give a new one a try.

I didn't say I couldn't shoot a m&p, but just didn't like the trigger.

I do find this XD hatred amazing. Honestly, I have been able to shoot every XD well that I pick up. I'm ok after some time with the Glocks. The M&P's we're just a bit of a struggle, but it sounds like I should try a new one.

BTW, for a defensive gun I have little interest in a trigger kit.
