XD 40 5.25

To Mr. Irwin, I don't get it. Anyway I think to myself" could this be true, whats the world coming too, I wonder if Clint knows?, maybe its not a bad thing." Also at that time Star mfg. is closing their doors and one of my wife's carry pieces is a star bm. Most would criticize this but she could put 5 out of 7 or whatever the magazine held into a paper plate at 25 yrds. This would get her a foot rub, so she really tried. Also at this time we were moving back to central ks. but we really didn't know this at the time. I will try to tie this all together in a second. The likely hood of her actually wearing that gun out probably isn't going to happen, but I thought I should get her something more modern with parts available so I get her a nice commander size 9 that I thought was comparable but she didn't seem impressed. This hacked me off a little except I sorta liked it so I threw it in my stack. Anyway she has a bad accident and has to have some extensive work done on her left arm. So this is about the time everybody is dumping their gen 3 glocks and it was one of the few pistols she could still manipulate the slide. I thought if heidi has one maybe this could work. If your thinking why doesn't she just shoot a revolver, I'm not sure; that's sort of a sore topic at the house; I ain't going there. If your wondering what does any of this have to do with the xd I'm getting to it. gotta go back to work.

I have a .40 XDm and while I am not a great shot by any stretch of the imagination, I do find the gun and my accuracy improved when I tried out the different backstraps for the grips. Finally settled on the mid size and since then the accuracy has improved, as have my skills. Granted the target was close( 7 and 12 yds), but handing the gun to my buddy, who shoots quite well, he had no problems getting small, tight groups at greater distances than what I was shooting at.

"To Mr. Irwin, I don't get it."

You were called out for your supposed poor grammar.

I was simply pointing out to the caller that his grammar was... lacking.

So this is about the time everybody is dumping their gen 3 glocks and it was one of the few pistols she could still manipulate the slide.

Eh? Not that I've noticed.

And yes, my gen 3 G19 is the easiest to rack of anything I've ever tried.

To Mr Dirty Harry I hope your foot heals up

My foot is great! Your posts seem to be much more readable as well.

Honestly, never been a fan of the XD myself, but that is personal preference. I have never heard bad accuracy claims from them. Maybe you got a legitimate lemon?

So I show back up in ks. and head to the lgs where the gunsmith is a bit of a local shooting celebrity. I say "hey if I ever got a weekend off; what 1911 is everybody shooting in stock or service?" He looks at me like "what rock do you live under?" He goes on to tell me it has to be striker pistol with 3 1/2 pd.trigger. It had been a while since I treated myself to a night at the range. I rented everything on the wall. I let the young help at night shoot some blue steel and they help me wade thru the sea of polymer. The ones that stick out in my mind were the ppq, hk, xd, FN but I shot the best group with a glock. I know this means nothing cause after shooting up to 20 pistols or so in a night you become fatigued and you not shooting well anyway. The part about Heidi and my wife is how the first polymer pistol ended up in the house. Now there is 3. Everything in life is relative or a compromise. Most old timers tell a newb just find something that feels good in the hand and shoot it alot which isn't bad advise. A glock is the worst feeling pistol I've probably ever shot but they do seem to shoot well. I got the xd cause I thought it was the best compromise, best length, best heft, best sights, you got a extra mag, it said "M", and Rob Leatham's pet project. I went .40 cause it makes major, I hope reloads slightly cheaper and when the panic hit the stores around here we always had some .40. I've seen on some the other forums where people are running berry's over clays, which I realize is a whole different section.

While some pistols will shoot better than others for no obvious reason, there are some trends that shine through. Two reasons why 1911s are so popular are the pistols tend to shoot well and .45 Auto is an inherently accurate round. This is a mostly stock 1911 (only a trigger job to 3.5 lbs) and a handload worked up for the pistol. Dollar for dollar they are tough to beat if you want an accurate pistol.

I have to work a lot harder to get a 9mm to shoot like this and that may be the same case with the 40. I don't have a 40 but I do have a 10mm and it seems to be easier to get accuracy from than the 9mm but not as easy as the 45. I am guessing the 40 is somewhat similar?? YMMV

^ Now that's how a pistol should shoot! ^

That's also why I love my P220.

Edit: care to message me that load? Also pat yourself on the back there, man. That's some shooting!

To Mr. Saleen that is a nice group, especially for free hand. To Mr Kawasaki; " lets not gloat about your 220." In a way I find it strange how few .40's are out there. I am starting to think your right about the inherent accuracy comment. Well I'll eventually figure out what it likes or I may have a very expensive paper weight.

There's nothing inherently inaccurate about the .40, some of the best groups I've ever shot were with the .40. Poor accuracy is most often a shooter issue (trigger control) or perhaps the ammo as I have shot some very inconsistent and poor shooting factory ammo. It's probably not the gun and assuming you're utilizing proper trigger control, maybe it just doesn't like the ammo you're feeding it.

I've had several XD's including an XDM and they shot decently, nothing to brag about but not badly either. I'm used to Glocks and the trigger system and as such can shoot them very well whereas someone else may not be able to at all. I think the 1911 is the easiest to shoot accurately, its single action trigger that has practically no creep requres less discipline to master than other triggers.
