WTB A Lever Action Rifle: Which One???

regardless of the slight decrease in value of marlins rilfes when they were bought by remington, the model 336 is still the absolute best current production, lever action 30-30 for less than $1000.

Agree with the Savage 99, but I don't think one can be found for less than $500.
My local gun shop has one in .308 that he's asking $500 for. It is in 90% condition. Just can't convince myself I need a .308. The .308 versions are pretty common, .250 Savage and .303 Savage are the rarer ones.

Here's one for playing cowboys and aliens!

As bad as that looks the wood stocked versions of the Mossberg aren't any better.

a Henry! even president Lincoln had one.
The Henry rifle Lincoln had was nothing like current guns.

Unless you are planning on hunting big game and want a fun gun for shooting go with a 22. The Henry is a decent starter gun that will shoot well and not break the bank. If you can find a good used Marlin 39 or Winchester 94-22 they will cost a little more than a new Henry, but are classics that will be passed down to your great grandchildren and will soon be worth more than you paid.

If you do plan medium game hunting I'd go 30-30 in either a used Marlin or Winchester. Overall Don't waste your time on a new version. The other calibes and configurations are fine, but are more specialized. The 30-30 will work just fine, is a lot cheaper and easier to find ammo for.

I'd say go with either a Winchester 94 or an older model Marlin 336 in 30-30. You shouldn't be paying more than $300-400 for used models, unless it's a pre-64 Winchester or NIB. I swear, sellers on gunbroker.com are smoking crack if they think they can get $450-500 for a used Winchester 94 or Marlin 336.

Different Henry. The Henry Arms Co. of today has nothing in common with the New Haven Arms Co. makers of the original Henry rifles.

Get a Winchester or Marlin 30-30. You'll be glad you did.

Every gun owner should have at least one lever gun -

Posts: 25 OJ don’t know witch is sharper You or the Rifle…. My vote is on the Marlin 336

Thanks - no way could my aged looks compare with that rifle - actually, it's a Winchester Hi Grade 95 in 30-06. Miroku made some 8000 as century commemoratives in 1995 - half in Grade 1 and half in Hi Grade - my wife gave it to me for our 25th anniversary 7 years ago -

Well - OK - so I did "help" her find it - we husbands are obligated to help our wives any way we can, IMO. All she got was a little (well - not really little) diamond ring - and she still thinks she got the best of the deal - important for a good marriage - she makes sure our schedule doesn't interfere with my weekly trip to the range - she's a keeper.

Make mine a Winchester. I've had several Marlins from .30-30 to .450 Marlin. I haven't been able to like them enough to keep them. They feel heavy and clunky to me. My brother-in-law has a 336 from the 1st year of production, 1940-something. It's a nice rifle, but it is flat out heavy compared to my '94 XTR in .375 Win. I like my Win better all the way around. Lighter, trimmer stocks (the fat Marlin forend is one of my gripes), better finish compared to the Marlins I've owned and the Winchester's action feels better too. Smoother. I also prefer the top eject to angled. Couple that with my latest experience with new production Marlins and I will take an older Winchester any day.

And the Marlin 1895M in .450 Marlin I traded for it:

OJ- An 1895 in .405 has been on my short list for years. My .375 makes me want one even more!

Most are saying get a marlin 336 and I agree. You may also consider a henry in .22LR or a .22Mag. Here is my 336 along side my Henry .22 Mag. both have a nikon pro staff 2-7 x 32mm.

Make my choice a Marlin 1894. I have as much fun slicking them up as shooting them and there is nothing easier to work on. I also now need scopes and the side eject is a no-brainer (I have passed all of my Winnies on to my son).

They shoot almost flat to 100 yds. and trash brush as opposed to deflecting plus you get a .44 hole BEFORE it expands. My most ambitious deer and hogs have run only about 20 yds.

I love adding my 2 cents when someone else's money is involved. Personally I like the styling and historicity of the Winchester 94. The Marlin is a fine firearm and is probably better built than the 94, but I don't believe it will keep its value quite as much as a 94. If you could find one I would look for a pre-64 in 80% or better condition. Barring that I would look for a 1980 or newer 94 in excellent condition. I bought 3 of them in the last year because I love the way they look and handle. My favorite is a 26 inch octagon-barreled 30-30 that just lays right in my hands. Good luck in your quest for a part of American history!

handle (shoot) as many (Browning, Winchester, Marlin, Savage 99,etc...) as you can, straight grip, pistol grip, and get the one that feels best in your favorite caliber !
