wow, just wow

Earlier I was looking at 1, the price was 16,500 bucks, yes sixteen thousand five hundred. I had it linked in here too, in another tread. Now it's sold. How much? I don't know that. But it's sold.

AustinTx - good point. But the proposition still holds even if it leads to a less than desirable outcome. Boom and bust.

Yes, that's all well and good, but common commodities have at least roughly discernible market rates

And that would depend entirely on WHICH market, wouldn't it? Someone in NYC, DC, CA, IL, will have differing ideas on market value than folks in Mobile, AL, Tyler TX, or Cheyenne, WY.....................

Well, obviously -- but not in any way that's particularly relevant to this nationally accessible internet auction, so I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make.

Dozens upon dozens of Pythons change hands every month on Gunbroker, another nationally accessible marketplace, and the money being offered for this Python is far, far above the going rate for one in this condition. There are plenty of opportunities this very minute for a buyer anywhere in the country to find a far better deal than what the leading bidder has committed himself to here.

Unless the bidder has some idiosyncratic preference for this exact gun (e.g., because the serial number is of great personal significance, or something of that nature), this is an anomalous and stupid decision by an uninformed (prospective) buyer. Nothing more.

The going rate for a nice Colt Python is about $2,000. Plenty of them on Gunbroker for around that price with no bids.

I don't understand the bidding history...normal 50-100$ increments, than a single bid from 2000-3000$?!?! if the bid is at 2000$ and I put my MAX bid as 3000$, wouldn't it just automatically go to the smallest percentage increment allowed? like 2100$ or whatever algorithm it uses. I would think whoever put three thousand was probably thinking that, and was happy to see someone else bid after him....

obviously it doesn't work like a normal auction where the smallest allowable increases are percentage based, since the newest bid is $3501. I am going to stay away from them for auctions all together. but really for a 70% gun, really nuts.

Yeah, the Bud's auctions don't work like GB's. Whatever amount you bid is the amount you will pay if you win the auction. I bet you're right about some participants thinking that the system would use automatic minimum increments.

Not my kind of auction at all.

What's the difference in valuing the Colt versus a high end luxury watch? Nothing. A $10 quartz watch tells time just as well if not better than a Breitling. Perception is reality.

This is smells of trickery. I am glad I am coming in at the end. It has less than 20 minutes to go.

By their standards mine ought to worth $20,000

Any item is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it.
And that folks is the bottom line, no pun intended. glad I purchased mine in 1981 and still have it. It makes a wonderful ICORE gun:D:D;)

That's just plain nuts. I have one like that only mine is about 95% or a tad more. I know that they aren't made any more and some folks think they are the Holy Grail - I'm the red headed step child - I don't care for them at all. I would never expect to get that much for mine . . . mine sits in the safe 'cause I bought it for an investment. For shooting . . . I'll take my old 1952 S & W M & P any day,

If this is a legit auction . . . all I can say is that there are folks in this world with more money than brains.
