Wounded Boar Charge

https://youtu.be/BwiFjyURA1M

I have to admit, there may have been some panic shooting there at the end when I started moving off of the proverbial X, but it all turned out well. Every time I watch the video, I get a bit scared all over again. I kind of like it. However, my wife was not pleased with the video. Apparently, I am not supposed to let the hogs get that close...as if that is a rule or something, LOL.

I counted 5 definite hits in the video before the panic shooting and only found three wounds, two of which were a single through and through of the testicles and hind quarter. It is like the hog swallowed up the shots and sealed up...pretty cool and very disturbing.

I was shooting a 6.5 Grendel, Hornady SST 123 gr. ammo. I took the first shot that was quartered away and was expecting the hog to go down. That shot should have gone right through the boiler room, but the hog was a good bit larger than I realized and the shot certainly didn't hit the spine. The big blood spot on the side was an exit, but I didn't find the entry.

You can buy fresh underwear from Walmart in the middle of the night, in case anyone was wondering.

Holy Cow!
Sure looked like you had him with the first shot, DNS. The second and third looked pretty darn good too.

I'm gonna guess the local WalMart had your correct size.

2nd and 3rd shots looked to be too far back.

For what it's worth, it doesn't look like the hog was actually charging. When they are scared, they tend to run in random directions. I've seen hunters actually knocked over by them. They weren't actually aiming at the hunters - that just happened to be where they wanted to run.

You maybe need a bigger gun.
Does anyone recall the private zoo keeper in Ohio that let all his half starved animals free one dark and desolate night?
Tigers, lions, bears, leopards, all kinds of scary stuff.
Most of the police hunters who went after them had .223s and wished they had something a lot bigger.
The ones with shotguns and .30s or more were glad they did.

Holy Crap. That was like watching the movie Predator....
Now I have to go change my undies.
Glad you had a 14 shot magazine.

Well, I am not psychic, but the change of direction was pretty definitive as was a couple of additional course corrections. I have had hogs run by on several occasions. This certainly didn't have the same feel. Either way, I was about to be roadkilled if the hog wasn't stopped.

Things have been cool and wet here. I may see if I can skin him tomorrow to look for terminal ballistic information...if I can get the buzzards off him.

I've never seen a hog head for the shooter like that. Definite intentional maneuver.
Usually running at the shooter is accidental... Just the direction it started running.

I was thinking before your first shot that maybe the tree you were shooting thru may deflect your shot. Second shot looked good, third was way behind. Looked like that third shot may have hit him in the hind quarter and turned him. Seen that happen with coyotes as they ran. Same with deer. When mortally wounded, many times they just run in the direction they are headin'. When a shot hits a leg and turns them, they just continue to run in that direction till they die.

First shot was a hit... I re watched the video

You can see him leaving blood in the flir, no mistaking it

It seems as though he was going toward the source of his troubles.

Friend had a boar in a trap. He opened the trap to let it out and it circle around straight at him. He was so surprised he poked it in the nose with a shotgun and it ran away. No shots fired.

Nice video.

I'm always amazed at how tough hogs can be. Last week I put a 770 grain full bore 12 gauge slug through both lungs of a 130 lb boar and he still ran off 75 yards into the bush. Same for a 200 lb boar with a .270 Win. round through both lungs and heart and he made it 40 yards into the brush. Tough animals. Nice work with your pig and don't make the wife mad again.

best wishes- oldandslow

I once shot a boar in the top of the head with a .45 colt buffalo bore.

He was in a trap

Shot him from above and the bullet made an exit out of his chest, between the front legs and blood poured out like I pulled a stopper out.
The animal immediately locked up and fell over with spasms, as was expected.

I went to my truck to get a rope to pull him out of the trap.

When I turned back around, the hog was back on his feet milling around...
I was kinda shocked, of course I finished him.

I'm not sure what happened, should have been instantly fatal...
My best guess is that maybe it missed vital brain tissue and traveled down his throat or something, and was temporarily stunned....

Anywho... Good work DNS, as always, your posts and videos have entertained me through the years.
I now live a long ways from Texas, so seeing the videos helps me get through my hog shooting withdrawals

two of which were a single through and through of the testicles

can you blame him for charging?:D

oh and I kinda see you stopping the swing after each shot, you are not supposed to do that (but Iget that it got hectic)

shooting running game is the same as shotgunshooting, a golfswing or a cross in boxing, you follow thru

oh and aren't wild pigs sus scrofa? or rather all pigs as sus scrofa?
