When you have a bore obstruction, it is the impact of the bullet itself with the bore obstruction that bursts or bulges the barrel.
I think one could demonstrate this by shooting a bullet from a high power rifle through a water pipe that's far enough away from the muzzle that there is absolutely no gas pressure in the equation. Put a solid obstruction in that pipe for the bullet to impact and you will see a bulge or a burst at the impact point.
