would you use S&b buck for home defense?

One note about S&B buckshot...

Because of it's unique "crimp", loaded rounds are a bit longer than other brands of buckshot. In my guns, that means I get one less round loaded into the mag tube.

Some overall lengths (OAL)

Federal 2 3/4" Premium buckshot - 2.32"
Winchester 2 3/4" buckshot - 2.32"
S&B 2 3/4" buckshot - 2.44"
Remington 3" slug - 2.56

I have shoot a fair amount of the S&B 3" 00Buck and have experianced a few problems. I have noticed the 'one less round' syndrom and its dirty/stinky, but more serious is the fact that it is VERY hard to extract from all pump guns I have shot it in. In both my 870 and FP6 the action is very hard to cycle after the shell has been fired. In a friends Mossberg 500, the empty hull was so tight that the extractor sliped over the rim and the shell had to be knocked free with a cleaning rod. Ironicly, my Mossberg 9200A1 self-shucks 'em just fine...go figure.

Buy a box or two and try them out before buying any serious quantity, they may work fine in your gun....or not.

2 3/4 00buck in Winchester Super-X and Federal "tactical" brands can usualy be found almost as cheap as the S&B stuff, and might be a better option.

I have noticed that it's a little stickier to extract from my Mossburg 500 (higher pressures?), but it's not a problem. I don't have the "one-less" problem, and I've never had any failures with it.

I like it just fine, and I'd have no problem using it for home defense. It sure is cheap, too!

Captain,

I think 200 rounds is more than enough to get an idea as to whether the ammo works in a particular shotgun, and whether it patterns worth a damn.

Shot a few boxes of S&B thru my 870, no problems at all except for the terrible patterns at 25+ yards. Went deer hunting with it once, probably wouldn't go hunting with it again. Good stuff for HD use, though.

I remember when it was $2/box from Cheaper Than Dirt, bought a bunch of it and would buy more if I could find it close to that price again...

Its cheap you can shoot with what you will carry in the gun, is it quality ammo has anyone experienced duds with it?

I've put 250 rounds of the 2-3/4" S&B 00 buck when I first purchased my shotgun without a single failure (ammunition and firearm-wise).

With that said, I wouldn't use it as a home defense load unless it was the ONLY load that were available.

I have one less round available to me due to the lengthened hull (due to S&B's crimp). This makes my 7+1 shotgun into a 6+1 shotgun.

However, the #1 reason as to why it isn't my first choice is...

S&B patterns VERY poorly in my scattergun.

I use S&B 12 pellet in both pump and auto, both Vang modified, and it works well. Sure does function my 1187 well.

I don't have trouble with dirty ammo; after 42 years in the service, I clean things regularly.

I use S&B in my 870's. I have burned up alot of it and other than a bit dirty, S&B has treated me well and never given me so much of a hint of trouble.

I shot a box of it through my 870 a couple of days ago, plus almost a box of S&B rubber buck. It runs fine in my gun.

Now I DONT OWN A SHOTTY, and HAVE NOT SHOT S&B BUCK

That said, I have shot lots of .45 S&B for practice, and I LOVE IT. Never had a bad feed with it, it always ejected. It was a bit dirty, but thats why hoppes is in business. Now, I can see dirty being bad in an auto, but if your using it in a SD capacity, just how many rounds of Buck do you think your going to need. Im guessing 1-3 depending on situation (if your not rambo-ing it). Now, I dont have S&B in my 1911, because it's ball ammo, and I want hollowpoints (as it stands, getting good expanding ammo in a handgun is more important to me because of its underpowered nature, than buck, which is mostly the same except for pattern.) Now, I am not trying to say anything about S&B shotty ammo, as I have not shot a single round of it, but if the rounds that I have shot have been any indication of its reliability, Id give it a fair swing.

I a .410 win 870 with full choked barrel 3" S&B 5 pellets of 00 buck loads pattern very consistenty. At about 10 to 25 yards the patern is a a line at .45 degress from left to right like \. The aim point if at the lower part of the sternum is from about the upper right chest to the left side of the gut, I havent seen the speed of the load listed, but at 1100 fps, anybody hit would definitely not be happy. Shot about fifteen from a 25 rd box to see if it was a fluke, but is did it every time. Never bothered to check out any other load.

I bought some from J&G Sales here in Prescott Az. They sell the 2 3/4" OO buck for $3.95 for a box of 20. Never had a misfire with S&B.

I would. I have used it to blow up targets and it has worked flawlessly. I like the price as well. You know what else is inexpensive and has worked well for me is fiocci rifled slugs.
