Would you let this guy cross the border?

Man with chain saw, sword is let into U.S.

by MICHAEL KUNZELMAN
Associated Press Writer

BOSTON (AP) -- On April 25, Gregory Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood. U.S. customs agents confiscated the weapons and fingerprinted Despres. Then they let him into the United States.

The following day, a gruesome scene was discovered in Despres' hometown of Minto, New Brunswick: The decapitated body of a 74-year-old country musician named Frederick Fulton was found on Fulton's kitchen floor. His head was in a pillowcase under a kitchen table. His common-law wife was discovered stabbed to death in a bedroom.

Despres, 22, immediately became a suspect because of a history of violence between him and his neighbors, and he was arrested April 27 after police in Massachusetts saw him wandering down a highway in a sweat shirt with red and brown stains. He is now in jail in Massachusetts on murder charges, awaiting an extradition hearing next month.

At a time when the United States is tightening its borders, how could a man toting what appeared to be a bloody chain saw be allowed into the country?

They let him in! :D

Too bad he wasn't Mexican. They would have kicked him out and we would have 14 threads on "them awful emmygrants". :D

The War on Immigration continues.

He was a U.S citizen, regardless of his looks what could they detain for? He was questioned for two hours and had checks run on him and nothing came back so they released him. I admit he is a crazy looking dude but I don't think U.S customs did anything wrong here.

So you guys are for detaining US citizens without any reason? At that point, there were no warrants out for him. The bodies wern't found until two days later. There was nothing to hold him on.

Maybe we should round up all those gun owners, because some precieve them to be scary

Hmmm, bloody chainsaw. In law enforcement we have a highly technical name for such a thing, we call that a clue!

Nothing to hold him on? Bah, I've seen people prosecuted on less, new cases not just probation violations.

Good to see the Keystone Cops have found new gigs at Customs. ;)

5th paragraph down it reports " Desperes is a naturalized U.S. citizen and was not wanted on any criminal charges on the day in question"

Hell! I'd have called it probable cause. I wonder how long it would have taken to determine if the blood was human or animal?

That is one scary looking guy.

For a few seconds, until I looked at the source and saw it was from the AP, thought that was a joke photo.

Reports are, that the station couldn't tell if it was actual blood or paint or even rust.

The real question should be, why did he come through with the murder weapon  And if he insisted on keeping it, why not clean it off?

He should have been held. It amazes me sometimes what liberals federal agents are. They are LEOs not advocates. Sad truth is, the Canadians didn't detain him either. Everybody blew it.
