Would you guys consider spearfishing to be a type of hunting?

Maromero: I have to liken that to saying that hunting is only hunting if you use a bow. Spearfishing with scuba is not as hard as freediving, but it sure can still be hard when the fish are big and smart. I've done freediving in the shallows that was 10x easier than on scuba on the wrecks of New York...

Scrap5000: one thing is too snorkle for yellowtail snaper in the shallows and another is to free dive for dorados and wahoo in the open ocean. Guess your right. It's all hunting but it's not the same to stalk a buck than to wait for him by the feeder.;)

what you are calling a pole spear i bought labeled as a Hawaiian sling. killed many cods, cabezon, flounder, sole, and a small halibut with it in the Puget sound. also lots of snapper, jacks, small tuna, mahi, in the gulf of mexico.

i also used a regular spear gun to get them too. just never tye off your spear line to your B.C. if you are going after big fish, it will take you for a ride if you get a bad shot! (dont ask how i know!)

You mean like this spear-gun?

How's about these lobsters?

This was a diving trip to a friend's place on Summerland Key. It was a real blast, Lobster Festival was going on a few blocks from the house with live music, etc. Dr. Strangelove is the sexy devil in orange trunks. The little guy in the first picture was the first fish I ever speared with my spear-gun, an AB Biller 48 Special.

Spearfishing is kind of weird, like bowfishing. It's not really hunting, but it's not really fishing either. It's a category of its own. Either way, it sure looks like fun. Went bowfishing a bit to try it out.

I saw an episode of ESPN Outdoors once, where they travelled to Trinidad to go lobstering with the locals, and especially this one guy in particular, who was supposed to be the best on the whole island.

He used some kind of fiberglass pole, that had no hook or loop on it that I could see. But SOMEHOW, when he stuck it in the lobster hole and yanked it out, the lobster would be stuck to the pole.

It was the weirdest thing, and the show did not even mention it once. It was almost like the guy had the fuzzy side strips of velcro or something glued to the end of the pole that would catch the lobster's spines.

Anyone have any idea about this?
