Would Now be a Good time to stock up on 7.62x54R?

I'm worried that 54R is going to be impossible to find,
like .22 is now, so I was thinking of saving up some money and buying a few spam cans. I would like to hear your thoughts. So thanks in advance.

If somebody builds an manufactures a pistol chambered in 7.62x54...BATFE will probably ban the mild steel core 7.62x54R just for spite; unless it's overturned by the U.S. Congress.

it's probably going to be your last chance unless a few more warehouses of it surface. in the fall of 2012 I spent $16 bucks a brick for 10 bricks of 22lr ammunition. people said I was a moron. then in December some nutjob shot up a school in Connecticut, the politicians started lobbying for gun control and all the crazies started stockpiling 22lr ammo. ammo disappeared for nearly a year and now when it can be found it is rarely found for less than $25 a brick.

now $160 for 10 bricks does not sound so crazy.

right now $125 per spam can of 54R may not sound like a good deal, 2 years from now, people could be offering $150 per can and you can just grin and offer them a trip to the door.

I'd wait and see, about 5-10 months, whether China's economy is going to contract as some predict. Ditto Eurozone. If they do, metals and everything get much cheaper. But yes, generally - the sooner the better - everything with metal in it is only going to go up... just like land...in the long haul.

Don't forget, the USA economy grew at only 0.1% annualized in the first quarter '14, and that could possibly get adjusted downward. Obama's recovery summer #6 is on its way, but I'm not overly hopeful. Everyone is thinking green shoots and such, so prices are high right now and have been for almost a year ...this may or may not soon change.

The 12,500 round drum of 5.56x45 M855 at Academy got reduced about 3 months back, from $6,500 to $5,000. But it may get better still. Hard to say.

Any time you are shooting an old mil-surp rifle,,,

Any time that you are shooting an old mil-surp rifle,,,
Mil-surp ammo for it will eventually get scarce.

When I was a kid in the 60's,,,
Mil-surp ammo for my 8mm Mauser was everywhere.

Now it's difficult to find the mil-surp ammo,,,
The only stuff I've seen for it lately is old Iranian surplus.

It's not so much that the price will go up (which it inevitably will),,,
But it will all get shot and you either have to reload,,,
Or pay a buck or more a round for hunting ammo.

So yeah, if you really like shooting that rifle,,,
Stock up on ammo every chance you get,,,
"Shoot one-Buy two" is not a bad idea,,,
That rule is why I have plenty of 22.

If it's an economic decision, then ask yourself if the same money invested in another form will have a greater return than the anticipated value of the ammo.

Another consideration is if the cost of the current ammo is greater or less than the cost of components and reloading equipment.

If it's reloadable brass with noncorrosive primers, most definitely stock up.

If it's a one shot deal (Berdan, corrosive, steel case or some combination of the three), that may change the equation.

Spam cans of that crap ammo is always berdan/steel & junk.
It does go bang though.
Last I bought it cost me $49 bucks a 440 rnd can but that was in the very old days of 4 years ago.
I gave the junk away when I sold the M.N. rifle for $50 bucks.

It's already starting to get hard to find surplus 54r I strongly suggest if you have the extra cash and find a decent deal get it while you can it won't be around much longer and your only choice will be to buy commercial

I'm worried that 54R is going to be impossible to find,

Then get dies for it, and lay in a stock of bullets and brass.

.311" bullets are available from Sierra .....

I bought Prvi PPU brass cased ammo for my mosins.... saved the brass .....

Winchester Large rifle primers are as common as dirt, and IMR 4064 works weel with almost every cartridge I have gun chambered in.

47.0 grains gives me about 2700 f/sec with the Sierra 150gr SP ......

Hello,

Buying ammo is always a good idea. Much like gasoline, the price will not come down much.

Please remember, too, that while ammo will eventually become scarce for other C&R rifles, the 7.62x54r is still in military use. There will be surplus for some time to come unless new laws/regulations are enacted.

Regards,

Josh

I have two cans of light ball, and just got one of heavy ball. For me, I'm ok with that... for the conceivable future.

Also picked up a can of 7.62 Tokarev and 7.62 Nagant. Got it right after Sandy Hook, and haven't seen cans of Tokarev since then. As of late, Nagant cans are not as prevalent.

If you can afford to you should always stock up. Say you have a can right now and can buy another one. Get that other one and bury it in the back of your closet and continue shooting the first can. When the first can starts running low buy more but don't touch the second can.

Eventually you can buy another spam can to squirrel away. But you also have to know how much ammo you think you need. Then double it.

Man I've almost bought a mosin nagant just for the cheap ammo!

Is the spam can stuff corrosive? I'm assuming it is. My local fun store has the long rifles (not sure of the designation) for $159 iirc. 440 rounds for $129 seems like a wise investment these days!
