Worst state gun laws??

I just saw the post about the firearms owners ID card in Illinois, and various posts about gun laws in California. How bad are things now-what has happened and who has it worst? (I'm a relative newbe to TFL, just found it a couple months back). I fled the PRNY several years back, hard to imagine things being worse elsewhere but this FOID crap sounds like it is. Not to pi$$ off anyone but I love my adopted state (Idaho)-instant background check (about 10 minute transaction on my last handgun), open carry and shall issue. Can carried concealed w/o permit if outside of a city limit or vehicle. Hard to believe but also one of the lowest violent crime rates in the country as well :)

Brian. Sounds like a cool place. We now have Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, and Idaho linked by some common sense.

Any others out there?????

Maybe that's how we defeat the federal government. State by state. Isn't there a Supreme Court decision somewhere about the Federal Government meddling in the affairs of the individual States??? Of course, they always resort to blackmail. Like the knew DUI law. Support it, change your laws, or lose millions in federal highway funding. Same old stuff. Why isn't that kind of blackmail prosecutable?????

Damn, I got long winded huh? Sorry.

Indiana. $25 for 4 year license, $15 to renew, no training. Class III weapons legal for carry. No prohibited weapons except short-barreled shotguns with shoulder stocks, switchblades and shuriken.
Never been asked for a license to carry, even when it was obvious I was, and was accepting a ride from a cop. A whopping 50 "families" stupid enough to join the Million Nazi March.

Madmike, great! There's another one. I almost became a resident up there this past summer. Visited Decatur. Too danged hot though!!! :D

OK madmike, I'm envious. Here CCW is $56 first 4 years with background check, $40 for 4 afterwords. Still waiting for mine, applied in the end of August.

I am in New Mexico. It hasn't taken me over 5 minutes to purchase a handgun yet. We don't have a concealed carry provisions but open carry is fine for all. You can keep it concealed in your vehicle, but it has to be open when you step out.

NJ - State & FBI background, fingerprints, about $50 and 2-3 months to get FID card. FID required to posess or buy anything, including long guns, shotguns, airguns.

Additional permit, fee, waiting, background check to but one handgun (including handheld airguns), within 90 days of rec't of permit. One purchase per permit.

And all this goes through the local PD. I'm generally for local control (as opposed to federal) of most things, as the constitution stipulates. In my case, I live in a nice, upper middle, crime free town, so this process is relatively easy. I imagine someone living in one of our larger cities (Newark, Elizabeth, Camden, Trenton) has a much tougher time of it.

Hey, don't forget Florida, birthplace of shall-issue CCWs!

Virginia and Pennsylvania are both pretty decent.

Virginia's CCW is approximately $50, and is good for 5 years.

Hawaii's gun laws are probably the very worst in the nation. With the exception of Washington, DC, of course, but that's not a state, and if I ever have ANYTHING to do with it, it never will be.

Smith & Wesson is dead to me.

If you want a Smith & Wesson, buy USED!

I live in illinois, home of the infamous FOID card. Yes, it does suck, especially since the clown (gov ryan) that signed it into law still has his taxpayer financed armed security force.
I live in a small rural village, full of hunters. Everybody here hunts, but convincing them that Gore and his ilk want their shotguns and deer rifles has been an uphill battle. But they are coming around though.

Mr. Scott,

I would not dream of forgetting about the great state of Florida. My only concern is if it will continue to survive the hurricanes! ;) At least in Oklahoma you can dodge the tornadoes! :D

Seriously, Could it be Florida is so pro-gun because GW's brother is the Gov??? Or were they like that before?

Nice hearing from you.

Danny,

The Jack Hagler Self-Defense Act, which gave Florida shall-issue CCW, was before Jeb's time. I believe Gov. Lawton Chiles signed it. The opening paragraphs of the Hagler Act specifically confirm the right of every citizen to own arms for lawful means, including defense against violent crimes.

IMHO there is no place in the USA where a self-defense shooting is less likely to go to the grand jury. Most times, the cops just call it a justified shoot and don't bother. There have been many news stories quoted on TFL concerning Florida shootings; so a search and see how they treat self-defense down here.

I've only been here four years, but observation of the election campaigns suggests that advocating gun control in Florida is political suicide. All five candidates in our local Sheriff's race proclaimed themselves pro-RKBA and pro-CCW. My favorite candidate wants to build a new shooting range, open to the public as well as for departmental practice. I'd love to see them add an IDPA-style layout to the regular firing lines! Maybe even a shooting house for room clearing practice.

Welcome to Florida, home of babes, beaches and body bags for badguys.

I'd give Iowa a grade of C-minus for guns laws. You need a permit to purchase a handgun. This is issued by the county sheriff after a background check that is about the same as the NICS. Costs $11 per year. With it, you can buy a handgun or a rifle without any further checking: just fill out the Uncle Sam form. No permit: no hand gun. No permit: NICS to buy a rifle. No records or registration of guns or purchases beyond the federal form.

Iowa is not a shall-issue CCW state. CCW policy is up to the county sheriff. Polk County (Des Moines) is tough, as are most counties from what I hear. You have to show the need is job related or evidence of previous threat. Or be somebody's buddy. The Republican candidate for sheriff is running on a policy of shall-issue to non-felons who pass a basic CCW course.

Sig, sounds like you need to get that Sheriff's candidate to run for Governor instead!!!

David, I was doing just fine until you mentioned the 3 Bs. Now I may have to think about moving down there.

I just don't like the idea of being cornered on a peninsula! :D

Don't you think that you just nailed the reason you've got that stupid card? Same as us cheeseheads: know-nothing gun owners voting for someone that's going to fudgepack
'em. Unbelievable.

Sorry, but FLorida is NOT the birthplace of CCW (1987). Indiana's law was passed in 1934. And we didn't need a license to carry before that. Last count, we had 1.4 million licensees. Population, 5 Mil. You do the math.
Vermont requires no license to carry. Never has.

A fine point, but I said birthplace of shall-issue CCWs. If Indiana's 1934 law is a shall-issue law, I will gladly retract my statement and give credit where it is due.

I'm just glad there are some common sense states around. Now if they would all just recognize the other states right to carry programs........ At least I know to stay out of Missouri, Illinois, and especially Kalifornia. Oh, and NEW JERSEY!!
