worst recoil from a handgun ?

#1 for me was a freinds 45-70 derringer , It was mean . I passed on the offer to shoot a encore chambered for the 338 win mag , The barrel was 14 inches and had a muzzle tamer but the 2 guys that brought it out were having trouble finishing off all 8 rounds .

Hmmm....I shot a Thompson Contender once in .35 remington, it was pretty mean.
But if you're refering to Wheel guns, I think the worse was a 657 Smith a buddy had.
That particular .41 mag had some "jar" to it.

A Thompson contender with some handloaded 44mag. I've shot lots of 44mag in revolvers with no problem, but that handload must have been made to drop elephants.

A 28 gauge H&R "Handi-gun." I have shot everthing up through 454 Casull, including the Scandium S&W's, and nothing hurt to shoot like that snake gun. The design of the stock drove it right back into the web of your hand.

Shooting buddy bought one of the "American Derringer" brand 2-shot over-unders in .357Mag. Last time I asked, he still had 49 of 50 rounds he bought originally, the really hot 158 Gr SJHP. I shot it ONCE with a .38Spl 148gr wadcutter target round.

When pressed about why he still had 49/50 of the hot .357 rounds, he muttered something about "...a tiny fractional bit more 'kick' than I expected..."

TC Contender with the old skinny barrel in .44 Mag.
My Wichita 7R with hot loads is also pretty grim. With my standard silhouette loads (160 @ 1650) it's fine.

I actually have one of these little jewels, great snake gun, much better than any snake charmers in .410. As far as recoil goes, it is a little on the painful side with heavy buck, but we must feel recoil different, because some of my monster .45 Colts hurt worse in my Redhawk with the factory grips, not to mention the .454 casulls I have fired in my time. While all in all, the worst I have fired was a .475 linebaugh in a 4" Super Blackhawk frame with the standard grip, not a bisley. Can you say ouch!! There is a reason that Elmer Keith's old NO.5 and all of Linebaugh's SA's have Bisley frames..

.44mag

For the person who fired the .44mag Desert Eagle and thought that was bad, Shoot a .50 AE Desert Eagle, you will notice the difference, then shoot my 4" Super Blackhawk, you will welcome that .44mag Desert Eagle back with a smile. :)

Worst for me was the 500 Linebaugh Maximum. 440 gr bullet @ 1550 fps vel. It tore the ligaments in my right thumb. I shot a total of six rounds as it was chronographed. Itwas the Bisley grip frame.

It was a couple of years before I could shoot anything, even a .22 right handed after that, and a couple more before I could shoot anything centerfire above 38 spl's. I had used and carried a 4" Smith 29 for a long time before that. Had to go to a Ruger SA for heavy loads, still can't shoot mags from a 29 after 13 years. Still gives me trouble off and on when working with a hammer much.

Would have to say its the Scandium Smith .357 of my brothers. That little creature is wicked. I have, shoot and like the 329 its nowhere near as brutal.

A custom built Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 that my uncle made to carry for outtings into the woods against bears...shortened the barrel to a stubby 3 inches...i fired a cylinder full before i handed it back over, bruised and busted up!!

A .475 Linebaugh on a Bisley Blackhawk frame converted by Ben Forkin in White Sulfur Springs, Montana. Definitely the worst recoil I've ever experienced in a conventional handgun, and I've shot most all of 'em.

Heavy .454 loads are *almost* pleasant after shooting this thing. I don't often get through all five rounds before I'm bleeding somewhere. I suppose I could use lighter boolits and a tad less H-110... nah, what fun would that be! :D

44Mag: My recollection of the recoil was likely influenced by the fact that the year was 1959, and I was 12 years old at the time!

when i lived up in faibanks alaska i bought some 44mag ammo from a local gun store that he sold as anti bear rounds. i fired six from my ruger super red hawk. needless to say i still have the rest of the box, from nearly 10 years ago... man those were some stout rounds.... man hands still hurts when i think of firing of the last of them.

For me it was my contender in 357 herrett. The only book I could find to get reloading information at that time was a Sierra manual. The load was "hot" 20 rounds and my right hand numb. It felt like someone would take a 3 pound hammer and with a good wack hit the end of the barrel. I have a 358 JDJ in contender and that barrel is easy to shoot! It's more like a push.

Latter I bought some other reloading manuals that had the new 357 herrett data. The hottest load in the other books where lower than the lightest load in the sierra manual  . and I shot near max in the sierra manual  . I should have known something was up when the cases were only good for 2 reloads and I had one hell of a time getting the gun to break open after a shot.

I haven't come close to firing any of the fire-breathing monsters related to elsewhere in this thread. Recoil doesn't seem to bother me much, but I don't think I have the cajones to do a .475 Linebaugh or a .45-70 derringer, let alone a .338 WinMag! Those guys must have rooms full of whips and chains, and make the Marquis de Sade look like a whimpering schoolboy!

The only gun that's drawn blood on me so far is my Ruger Redhawk .44 with the factory stocks...the bottom edge likes to peel the skin off my left palm after about 50 rounds.
