Woman and home defense

can leave loaded forever - no springs are under tension

You can leave a semi auto pistol loaded as long as you want. It DOES NOT hurt springs to be under tension. That is a myth.

Walther P22

Walther P22 with stingers loaded. Loud and enough to incapcitate an intruder. No recoil issue. Looks nice and built fine.

Well, If racking the slide on a Glock causes a bit much effort to the point of being uncomfortable, that will be the case with most semi-automatics. The previously suggested 4" barrel revolver in .38 Special is a sure bet.

Lots out there to choose from, but I would guess you could trade the 442 even for a good condition used S&W Model 10, 15, 19, or 66. Those models have a good sized frame for a female yet are heavy enough to absorb recoil much better than the Airweight. The Smith's are known for excellent triggers in both double action and single action use. Uncomplicated, easy to use and very reliable.

Your Ruger 10/22 rifle is actually an excellent gun for home defense. The .22 LR is nothing to be sneezed at from a rifle.
I really suspect you would like an S&W model 60 with a 3 inch barrel. It's almost the same size as your 442, but heavier.
Have you tried larger grips on your 442? That can make quite a bit of difference. The little stock grips are for concealment. Larger, rubber grips can soak up a lot of the recoil.

I am going out after Christmas and try a few guns. However, changing out the grips on the 442 may make a difference as many have pointed out.
I will get some new grips and see what happens. It has black, hard plastic grips on it. I have only a few bucks to lose and I love the "feel" of this gun in my hand, but not when firing.

Thanks for the nod to my .22. I can actually hit small targets with it and have not practiced. Of course, it has a scope so how could I not? :o

Upon your recommendation, I went out and got a shotgun. It is a Moss 500 20 g. Big 5 had them on sale for $249.00.

So, I came here for help and got it!! I believe that I am all set.... Shotgun, .22 rifle, and .38 that I have to work on. This advice that y'all have given is worth it's weight in lead, ... er gold to me.

Thanks very much for the help,

LL

I love threads like this. A question is asked, good advice is given without arguing, and the problem is solved. Best of luck LightHouse Lady!

FirstInLine keeps the GP100 by her side of the bed and the Rossi 3" in her purse. Both loaded with .357 SD rounds. When at the range, she shoots the .38SPL light loads I load up for her. The point of impact at 50 yards is considerably different, but it is essentially the same at 50 inches.

She likes her HiPoint in 9mm, but doesn't carry it because of all the bashing-by-brand-name going on. This is despite several thousand rounds through it without a hitch.

My wife is very accurate, confident, and secure with her 4" 586 S&W. Great trigger, and with after market grips, just right for her small hand. She shoots 38 Sp +P, not 357's. Thus, with it being a rather heavy gun she has no problem with recoil of follow up shots. After all this is her home defense night stand gun, not her carry gun, so the weight is no problem.
