Winchester model 70 barrel bulge - suggestions

If it's important to the owner to keep the original look:

He might want to look into back-boring the barrel to create an "inner-crown" about 3" back of the muzzle. That would preserve the appearance and allow the rifle to retain much of its former accuracy. The barrel should be slugged from the muzzle end to find the point at which it starts to bulge. The back-boring should start a bit before the bulge starts.

Magnaporting an inch or two behind the new "crown" would minimize gas tipping. Accuracy may not be as good as it used to be.

He bought a couple of vintage barrels and is going to have his Smith install the best of the two. Hopefully he'll end up with a good hunting rifle after all this is resolved.

Forget all of this, take it to a reputable Smith and have the barrel and action examined.

He is taking it and a couple of period correct barrels that he's already bought to his Smith who will make recommendations.
