Winchester 94AE in .44Mag question

I've got a line on a 1980 94AE (I don't know what the AE means) carbine in excellent condition except for two dings in the fore stock wood. Are these good guns for TN deer hunting? Would they take a hog?

What would be a good price to offer?
 
I bought a 94AE in 45 Colt for my youngest. The Angle Eject was developed around the 307 and 356 Winchester rounds at 50k PSI. It also allowed a top mounted scope since the ejection port was angled, too. It shot extremely well after I replaced the sights with XS Ghost Ring sights. I paid $500 and it was NRA Good. The 44mag would be an excellent deer/hog round at 100 yards. The old Remington Green Box 240gr SP will surprise you.
 
Is a 100 yards the max humane distance for hunting with the .44mag 94? It's a carbine if that matters.

I think I could get the Winchester and a Ruger Security Six .44mag as a combo deal for $900
 
Probably, sounds like a decent deal if both are in good condition. What barrel length and finish (SS, Blued) is the Ruger? I had a 44 Trapper AE that shot really well, wish it was still here.:mad:
 
They're very clean, the only thing wrong are two dings in the forestock otherwise the 94 could pass for new. The security six doesn't show any wear but those guns typically don't.

I've heard the 1980s 94s aren't well respected, are they still pretty decent?
 
AE means angle eject. It was designed so the gun could have a scope on top of the receiver instead of over the barrel. Ruger never made the Security Six in .44mag. All Ruger 44mags are either a Super Blackhawk or Red Hawk model. The Winchester AE is a decent rifle and will easily kill any hog you shoot it with if the bullet is placed in the vital. Without accuracy, distance is irrelevant. You will find the recoil to be substantial with heavier loads, but that is seldom noticed while hunting. Off the bench to sight it in and it will be quite a bit more noticeable. Not really bad, but not like shooting a light caliber rifle. If the handgun is a .44mag Super Blackhawk (I'm betting it is at that price for the combo), it's not a steal by any means.
 
I had several 94 AE's 44, 307, 356, 7X30 Waters. Never had a problem with any of them but they are not regarded like a pre-64 M94. I am assuming the Security Six is a 357 Mag, probably a 6" barrel.
 
I have a "Trapper" 94 in 44 mag. It's an excellent alternative to a heavy caliber handgun. Good enough for hogs, deer, and black bear at reasonable ranges.
 
44 mag AE

The 44 mag in a rifle is plenty for deer here in Tennessee as well as hogs.A heavy bullet like that (240 gr or heavier) will pass through a deer at much greater ranges than that.We don't have very large deer here so a 44 is a very capable round the limit will be your ability to place your shots well and not miss or fail to hit the vitals.Same goes for hogs.The idea for the Angle Eject was for mounting a scope if I remember correctly.If you do buy it you can try for yourself,there is a 5 day hog hunt on Catoosa WMA Jan 6-10 in Crossville,no limit either sex.
 
I re-read #3 and it does sound like a 5.5" Redhawk, an even better deal. A Redawk would be DA/SA while a Blackhawk would be SA. The 44 mag lever guns I have shot were so much nicer than a 44 pistol. I think a 44 mag in a lever action is a great combination, and a 5.5" Redhawk should be a very nice compromise between portability and recoil dampening.
