Winchester 94 .30-.30 vs. Rossi .357 M92

Ok your entering my wheel house.

I have a Rossi M92 357 magnum and a few 30-30's and 32 WSP's

Lets start with the Rossi. I picked mine up as a plinker and to use as a brush gun for Deer.
As a Plinker it is an excellent choice. I easily cut the 2 inch bull out of targets at 100 yards using 125gr cast bullets.
As a Brush deer getter. It has not lived up to my expectations.
For me my load of choice is ether 170gr swc or 180 gr rnfp cast bullets.
Loads that work excellent in my Ruger Black Hawk.
Heavy bullets and this gun do not go together. The culprit is Rossi's use of a 1 in 30 inch twist rate. Excellent stability for 125gr projectiles, Completely useless for the heavies. At 158 it is marginal. When I say useless I mean useless. In 6 months trying to get heavies to fly. I still cant get them to hit a 12 inch square at 50 yards. They just tumble.
A older Rossi or Marlin with a 1 in 16 twist rate would work better.
Still wont trade it, its just not a deer gun. I dont have any experience with the 44 magnum version. That maybe a better choice for deer.

I like the older marlins:
I have a 1958 model 336 in 30-30. These are models before the Micro Grooves and the build quality and triggers are excellent.
I just picked up a 1941 Marlin Model 1936 in 32 Winchester special.
Again No Micro Grooves. Case Hardened action. Sweet smooth trigger.
Brush deer getters par excellence.

I shot a new Marlin last year.... YUK....
Why pay 4 or 500 bucks for a new one when good used ones can be gotten for $300 and are 10 times the gun?

Oh another good 30-30 for cheap is the Savage model 340.
These are bolt actions and can find them on GB for 300 bucks or less.
I will be taking mine out this Sat to tromp some swamp. Saw a big one in there last night.
