Will we ever see "modern" surplus firearms?

MilSurp guns for LE

I don't know if you guys/gals are aware, but there is a government program where Law Enforcement Agencies can purchase surplus military firearms for quite literally a few dollars. Personally, I completed my "sub-gun" certification on a military surplus M16-A1. Our dept. also had several M14s. After the initial ammo scare, all of our guns were neutered because of the cost of ammo. Ridiculous even for LEAs let alone the individual like you or me. There's a big difference in cost of training and qualification. 300 round qualification for "sub-gun" with minimum score of 90% compared to 50 round qualification for "patrol rifle" with minimum score of 70% (at least those were the minimum qualifying scores for our department) or you didn't carry one.

Anywho, those guns will (to my knowledge) never be available for citizens to personally own, but that's more "civillian" guns not being bought up by LEAs and available to the private citizen.

Also, I believe Gov. Brownback (KS) signed legislation last year which ceased the destruction of seized guns and made it legal to sell them to FFL holders for resale to public. I can't complain about the GIANT leaps in 2nd Amendment affirmation type legislation in Kansas in the last few years. Hopefully more states will follow.

Back in the '60s, the ATF didn't say squat when CMP sold selective fire only M-2 Carbines. All fun parts were removed of course. Modernly, they probably would not permit it.
The problem was that the M2's weren't hard to convert back, and there was a bit of kerfuffle about that. Fast forward to 2010, when the current administration decided they didn't want us to import "weapons of war" that could "fall into the wrong hands" from South Korea. I can guess the M2 issue came up in deliberations.

We will probably never see current-issued service weapons sold to the public. That is why they sell civilian model M4, M16, M9, and M1A's. Actual Select-Fire rifles will never be sold to the public, even if they are neutered to Semi-auto only.

If anything, Law enforcement agencies can and do buy up the surplus M4's and M16's. I have a good friend who is a Marine Veteran and is now a Deputy. I went to his house last month and He showed me his M16 rifle that was issued by his Department. It was a Colt M16 Government-restricted model with the Full-auto marking, but it is converted to Semiauto only. It was a nice but well used rifle with the A2 carry handle. I asked him why their department converted it to Semi only, and he said that it is for Liability reasons.

The best we can hope for are cheap used M9's. But even those are already being sold to the public directly by Beretta.

Don't blame politicians you don't like for the fact that it's unlikely these surplus military weapons will be sold cheaply in huge volumes to the public. Have any of you considered maybe the gun companies aren't exactly in favor of losing sales? I'd love to buy a cheap Benelli. I'll bet all the major manufacturers would rather not have thousands of them dumped on the market.

NO we will never be allowed to buy used military firearms.
All current US military firearms needing repair or refurbishing are sent to Anniston AL, and if unrepairable, they are ground up into scrap.

The enabling legislation for the CMP, phasing out the DCM, prohibited sale of surplus handguns. No obsolete Berettas when the new powerful military sidearm comes in. (Not that that will actually happen; the purpose of the study is to conduct a study, not buy guns.)
