Will guns and ammo for civilian use ever be banned entirely in the U.S.?

yes...............right after there is complete honesty in government by a congress and white house that truly wish to serve the public.

"ever" is a long time. I don't think there will be any ban and confiscation of all guns in my lifetime....but I remember saying in 1995 that "The internet is just the CB Radio of the '90's". I've been known to be wrong when it comes to predictions about the future. :D

It is ultimately in the hands of the Supremes. The Dems have four solid votes now. And I think Scalia smokes. So who knows. Don't be lulled into complacency by recent decisions. Could be a heartbeat away-literally. Vote only for gun rights politicians. always!

It is ultimately in the hands of the Supremes.

Ultimately, it is in the hands of WE the PEOPLE.

Remember what happened when the crown opted to try and confiscate the arms and powder of a certain group of Yankee colonists?

I expect similar results should the federal government try the same thing, REGARDLESS of any supreme court "ruling".

The trends have been running pro gun here in the United States.

Could it happen? Things can always happen when people get to complacent about government.

I don't lay awake at night or spend any time worrying about it myself. I do remain vigilant.

Given the two recent Supreme Court decisions - Heller and McDonald - and the way that the NRA and SAF are going after states and cities not in compliance, I would expect the next decade to be a tough one for the anti-gun crowd.

+1. While I don't expect guns to be banned, I also don't expect people to stop trying to get them banned.

Such a ban, either by Congress or the Supreme Court, would only result in massive noncompliance as a minimum response. We are not going to allow ourselves to be subject to confiscation, arrest, or any other adverse action against legal owners of firearms. The chaos would topple the government in a matter of weeks.

Wow lots of really good answers and perspectives. I'm glad I asked this question. SKANS I thought your answers were awesome; everyones answers have some merit though. "The government would be toppling within weeks". At least for now is probably true too.

The anti-gun crowd will have a bad decade ahead of them I HOPE SO. I would call myself a democrat in most political regards except for gun rights. Many people think that's an oxymoron. I don't think so. I think that REAL democrats and republicans should make gun rights a none issue i.e. that is respect people's rights to own guns PERIOD!1

A good example of a decent real Democrat is our Governor here of Montana Brian Schweitzer. He's a democrat but has actively helped gun rights in Montana and Abroad. For instance he's defended the right for college students such as myself to be able to have a gun on a college campus to protect myself as a law abiding citizen.

:) Anyway Great answers people.

Happy Shooting

I read the question of the OP; will guns and ammo ever be banned in this country? (abridged version)

The first thing that came to mind is that famous speech made my Charleston Heston.........

I think that they will fail to get an outright ban so will continue to disqualify as many people as they can from gun ownership through statute violations like they've been doing. The USA has more of it's people in jail than any other country on earth. When it reaches 51%, I'm changing sides. :D

For an outright ban there would have to be a sweeping constitutional change. If that happens over one amendment then the flood gates would open and the constitution would become a "duck shoot". Right now the constitution/bill of rights keeps things in balance on many issues. Governments know this, and recognize there is too much at stake. However there always has been and always will be state governments that break the law of the land... federal law. Even the federal government brake the law. That's what is so good about the constitution it keeps everything balanced and we have to be vigilant to keep it from being "interpolated" by biased illegal guessers, scared irrational people, and corrupt governments.

Britain had a provision for a pseudo RKBA in the bill of rights that dates back to the 1600's. It took powers away from the sovereignty that would have enabled a monarch to disarm the people. Unfortunately it did not impede the same of the government. We are better off with our constitution as it keeps everyone in check.

I think you nailed it, Vytoland. And that wonderful political honesty is scheduled to break out just as soon as the flight of pigs clears my barn...

The Constitution is just a piece of paper. If fewer and fewer people own and shoot guns, the more likely it will become that your legislators will ignore that piece of paper.

Dont' believe me? Machineguns are nothing more than firearms. Machineguns made after 1986 are firearms. A machinegun made in 1985 can be identical to one made in 1987. However, all US Citizens (unless you have a special license which is next to impossible to get) are banned from owning post '86 machineguns. That is a nationwide ban of a large category of firearms that are "off limits" to ordinary citizens.

What about semi-autos manufactured after 2017 - why can't they be banned?
What about revolvers manufactured after 2018 - why can't they be banned?
What about all high-powered "sniper (i.e. bolt action) rifles manufactured after 2019 - why can't they be banned?

It was done before. No one is able to change that or get that lost right back. It can and probably will happen again. How long do you think it would take if ALL GUNS made after 2012 are declared "off limits" for guns to get old, obsolete, unobtainable, unrepairable and ammoless?

Guns and ammo, might get priced out of existence. At least for the average person, for the fanatical hobbiest and the wealthy they'll still be available.

Few people can accurately predict the future. I'm not one of that group and I don't know anyone who is.
My guess is that guns will remain at their current level of availability for our lifetimes.

In the next few years the political turmoil should prevent either side from pushing for more control as that would be political suicide in times like these. Each side is grasping for power right now and if they made a move against guns it would stop them dead in their tracks come election time. That's my theory as to why Obama hasn't done anything to hurt us gun owners. He's picking his battles and knows that if he goes after guns he'll almost certainly lose the next election for the democrats as well as himself.

No, I don't expect guns to ever become "illegal" in the sense that owning any at all will be prohibited, but I do expect the costs of ownership to go up. I don't ever expect to see ammo as cheap as it was 10 years ago. I expect more of the chipping away at certain gun types until we're left with lever guns and revolvers.

But then again, what do I know?
