Will a 30-06 bullet fit on mosin chamber?

I have never heard 7.7 jap, 303 brit, 7.62x39, or 7.62x54R referred to as 32 caliber cartridges.

I always remember hearing Vets I spoke to refer to the 7.7 Japanese cartridge (and the Type 99 rifle as well) as the '31 jap'.

Never heard one of them actually admit trying to chamber an '06 in one though.

The discussion relevant to that reply was in regards to rifles that had been chamber reamed to .30-06.
Try checking the context. ;)

You are right. Sorry for that. I was fixated on the other claim that GI shot 06 out of 7.7 jap out of desperation, which was not possible.

As you can see, the 30-06 (or .30 G 1906 as its headstamped in the picture) is quite a bit longer than the 7.62X54. The Russian round is rimmed while the '06 is rimless, but the cases have similar neck length and bullet diameter so once the '06 shoulder contacted the shoulder of the chamber it could not go any further. The bolt would remain open and I seriously doubt anyone is strong enough to force it closed, which would collapse the case and shove brass into the rifling. The only way I see it working is if you have a seriously worn chamber and throat, in which case you don't want to fire it...at all...

I didn't know anybody who fought in the Pacific theater but the ones who fought the Germans said the 8mm Mauser could shoot the 30'06 without alterations. Most of them didn't know the name of the ammo. They would say the German rifle could shoot the American ammo...
Hmm I don't know. 8mm Mauser is definitely shorter than 06. In fact it is even shorter than 7.7 jap. I just don't see how it was possible without reaming the chamber.

Again I read stories the other way round. People, who may not be GI, tried shooting 8mm in 06 rifles. They could chamber the round. But most of the guns blew up as result. .323" is just too big for .308" bore, and 8mm Mauser is a powerful round.

30-06 will not fit in an 8 mauser any sooner than x54R or 7.7 jap. 7.7 jap will fire from a 3006 but none of those others are true

The 7.62 Moisen is acutaly a bit larger than 30, so the bullets work (I did a bore check on one with my gauge and was amazed at how tight it was)

I shudder to think of shooting a 30-06 in a Moisan though, wow

It was not just Bannerman that did '06 conversions. Every once and a while you see one pop up at an auction. Definitely not a safe rework. The "One fits in both" rumor has been around since arrows were used. I used to hear that in the Military about 7.62x54 and 7.62x51. Take a GOOD look at the two and use your head. I was with someone that fired a .300 Savage in a Russian and the case came out normal, but the .300 is really loaded down compared to a .308. In the Korean War, the U.S. converted a couple thousand Arisakas to 30.06 by Reaming. I had one and they are heavily stamped U.S. CAL 30, or something close to that (Memory failure). That is how rumors start. I wish I had $100 for every sniper rifle a grandson wanted to to sell me that grandpa took off a dead Japanese sniper. Every rifle was always a last ditch that was probably grabbed by occupation forces at the end of the war. Shooters/hunters are worse than old women when it comes to rumors.

Case Sizes

Based on some dimension drawings I saw:

Cartridge ---------- 30-06 -- 7.7x58 -- 7.62x54R
Head to shoulder --- 1.95" --- 1.87" ---- 1.56"
Head to neck ------- 2.11" --- 1.98" ---- 1.72"
