Wilderness Carry for a Woman

Bear spray us easier to hit with, because of the sensitivity of bears' nose.

Bear spray is also easier to direct into the target. If you shoot a handgun and see no effect, you really don't know where the bullet went. With the bear spray, you can see the stream and move it into the face of the attacker regardless of how many legs it has.

I don't know about everyone else here, but I don't trust myself to be able to shoot like the Lone Ranger if a bear was bounding at me.

Horsefeathers.

Bear spray probably works on the bad guys too.
And employing it doesn't require as much regard to consequences as a firearm.

Bear spray works on just about anything with mucous membranes in the eyes, nose and mouth. That includes YOU, if the wind is just wrong.... and the wind in the mountains is oh so steady and predictable, ain't it?

Maybe you want to be blind and choking at bear-time, .... you won't have to watch him eat you and yours if your eyes are clamped shut because of the bear spray that blew back at you..... disregard the consequences of use if you wish......

I've never used the stuff, but doesn't bear spray come out in a stream? It shouldn't be like spray paint blowing around everywhere.

I have spent most of my life in South Texas and have had the opportunity to use LOTS of wasp spray. Don't remember it ever getting in my face even when prayed almost directly overhead. You'd think as much thought would go into bear spray dispensers....

This right here:

I'd say a security six, like the 3 inch fixed sight one I have, but that might be a tad heavy.

This 4" stainless service six looks good. Have to shop for it, not made anymore.

Put a spring kit in it

I used to carry a .44 magnum when hiking in {Black} Bear country. The more I read about Black bears, the less alarmed I got at the prospect of running into one, at least in Arizona. Black bears that live in Grizzly neighborhoods sound like they've picked up some of the Grizzly aggressiveness, probably out of a survival need. Elsewhere, they sound more like petty criminals than homicidal maniacs.

Bear spray has been tested and sounds really effective. It NEVER makes the situation worse either. I now carry a can of UDAP and a much smaller, lighter handgun to deal with humanoids and other smaller animals.

From the Anchorage Daily News article:
As for the wind, Smith reported that in "7 percent of bear spray incidents, wind was reported to have interfered with spray accuracy, although it reached bears in every case."
and:
"Ninety-eight percent were uninjured by bears in close-range encounters," they concluded. The few that were injured suffered minor wounds.

I personally take those odds each and every time that I go out my front door with my bear spray.

I like firearms, carry them too. Still spray first, personally know that it works on bears and moose and dogs, and I have yet to get enough on me to slow me down in "exiting stage left" with all of my parts intact.

YMMV (Play the odds however you like.)
