Wife with small hands

Hello thanks for taking the time... As the title states i have a wife with very small hands and wrists. i am looking for something small with a reasonably short trigger pull. i would prefer the option to have double action as i would rather safety be something that she doesn't need to think about. a manual safety is fine but i want to leave the gun hammer down (or at least half cock) on a live round in a safe, in the dresser. i have an xd, cz-p01, ruger six and a couple 1911s, all to big or in the cz's case too long a trigger reach. Thinking a .380 or a small revolver. i had a glock and a j frame 686 that was also to much for her. maybe a berso or sig .380? please limit suggestions to guns YOU HAVE OR HAVE SHOT. thanks again

If you can find one, a S&W Chiefs model (model 36) is a small, compact .38 cal revolver. They are hard to find, and are not +p rated. Loaded with either wadcutters or semi-wadcutters, they are fairly easy to shoot. They are also light weight.

Take her to gun store to see what she likes. She can handle small pistols and revolvers and feel what fits her hands best.

I have a Kahr 9mm which I like. It strikes a nice balance, in my opinion, between the high capacity double stacks and the small pocket pistols/revolvers which can be harder to control and bring back on target.

An even better idea is to take her to a range which rents firearms and let her shoot some of the ones she likes.

I could see one of the Kahrs being a great fit for her. But, of course, there's no way to tell until she holds the thing.

wow cant believe i forgot about kahr. i have picked up a few in the gun stores and never cared for how thin they are. but my hands are pretty large. any model suggestions? hows the recoil on such a small pistol? .380 vs 9mm? i have and defiantly will again taken her to the local gun shop. this is great a perfect excuse to buy another gun. thanks

i will completely let HER decide what fits HER and is comfortable for HER. Im just looking for others personal preferences and experiences. The link you provided does not work, thanks though. i will try and google it too check it out.

My wife has tiny hands as well. All around a very small woman. Her favorite gun is a Sig P239. It has a slim grip, easy to manipulate slide and is comfortable to shoot, even with her SD loads (Corbon 115gr, quite snappy). She also has no problem reaching and operating all of the controls. Only problem is its a bit heavy for carry otb.

you can and let HER pick out what SHE likes

What? A woman deciding what she wants? That's crazy talk! Just wait till Pax reads this thread, she'll set you straight on the idea of letting your wife decide what gun she likes.

Ok, no more sarcasm...

My special lady friend likes Glocks. 1911s too. More than that she likes revolvers as the grips are a little more ergonomic than the automatics... But (bless her heart) she loves a gun that she can shoot dry, slap in another mag and keep shooting.

My girlfriend is small & a fairly new shooter. I bought her a S/W 637, which is an airweight. I reload light wad cutters for her. I don't know how experienced your gal is, but an auto can be a little harder for a new shooter to operate, jams, slide operation, etc.

I am sounding like a broken record but here I go again.

Buying a weapon of any type is like buying a pair of shoes or any number of speciality apparel.

It is extremely personnal and must fit. Take her to a gunshop, leave her alone, but monitor the salesman, and let her find the weapon that suits her.

My former boss and his wife went to CCW class together. He was adamant about the pistol she purchased. He wanted an auto she refused and purchased a small 38spl.

She now outshoots him.

Taurus .380 Revolver

wow all those responses and only one person actually answered the question. I will let her pick and choose. i was/am looking for REAL EXPERIENCE with specific guns. ie: my wife has small hand and she likes this and not this. please stop repeating the previous posters who also did not actually answer the question. I WILL LET HER CHOOSE. please stop posting that. doesn't mean i don't want to do research and ask some questions. again thanks for taking the time..wow

Buckeye have you shot that revolver? That was something i was interested in. how long is the trigger reach? Is the double action light enough for a small handed woman? thanks for the suggestion!!

I have relatively small hands, and avoid pretty much double stack anything because of it..... I like my EMP.

My 5'2" tall Aunt has small hands as well, and is recoil averse...... she liked my 5" 1911 (target loads) and my brother's sR9c.

I originally bought a Taurus PT 111 Mil Pro 9mm for a conceald carry but the grip is a little small for shooting comfortable at a range but my GF found it great since she had smaller hands so it fit perfect. It has over well 1500 rounds though it with no problems except some bad ammo. So for a CC gun I still use it ocasionally but let my GF keep it at her house since I just got a new Sig 1911 Ultra since I wanted a small gun but larger grip.
I can say it has been a great gun and for a woman with smaller hands it is perfect.

I carry the Ruger LCR in .357/38 it can shoot either one of those rounds and the .38 is easy on the hands and its a great little gun.

Since I wear a size 9 glove, my opinion about what will best fit your lady's small hands isn't worth spit, so I'll keep it to myself.

However, my mother was a small woman, who wore a size 3.5 ring. She stood 4' 10.5" and never weighed over 108lbs. She was, however a very determined woman. Dad once got her an Ortgies .25acp. While the grip was acceptable, she lacked the strength in her hands to rack the slide to load/unload the gun (small fingers and a very small gripping area + strong spring meant problems for her).

She could shoot a 1911, and actually rack the slide, but it wan't easy for her. She could shoot Dad's S&W M28 6" .357Magnum, with the factory stock "magna" grips (the small ones), but the weight of the large revolver was a chore for her.

She was deadly accurate with her Ruger Super Bearcat, and comfortable shooting it. Since its "only" a .22 lots of folks are going to sneer at it for self defense, but when push comes to shove a small gun that you shoot well and are comfortable and confident with is better than a larger one that is difficult to use. Only hits count, and hits with a .22 (or any small caliber) count for more than misses with everything else.

She was also proficient at close range with her father's double barrel 12ga shotgun, fired from the hip. She would just hold on to the gun, and in her words "let it swing" when she shot it.

As to having a gun left ready for her, one that your lady could shoot, but have trouble loading, thats ok (safe storage concerns adequately addressed, of course), BUT Murphy being the devil that he is, there is the risk that the one time its not ready for her use, would be the one time she would need it most.

I once knew a statetrooper, and a big guy at that, who's home defense gun was a Ruger .22 auto (the MK I). He was quite happy with it. Now, this gentleman could, with his back to the target, turn, draw and empty the gun in about a second and a half, cutting the eyes out of a silhouette target at 7 yds. I've seen him do it, more than once. Don't ignore a .22 as an option, if your lady can use it fast and well. Its a lot better than bare hands and a scream.
