Why would you buy a lever rifle in 22 mag instead of 357/38?

I found 22 mag ammo after no luck at several stores. $25 for fifty rounds of Hornady 30 grain V-Max.

For that you could have a box of fifty 357 or 38 special and reloadable brass.

I know these ammo disparities vary over time but still, that cray-cray.

You're comparing top of the line 22 mag prices to cheap .38/.357 stuff? Find comparable .357 stuff to those V Max .22 mags and you'll be shocked at the price. I don't own a .22 mag but the price of it usually runs close to 9mm from what I've seen.

Nope. No rimfire rifles for me. I reload, and cast my own lead bullets.

I do too but it's nice sometimes to not have to go chasing brass. That said I don't really have any use for a .22 mag. For what I use a .22 for the LR is plenty good enough.

I would buy one if I wanted one, they have soul, more so if you already have something in 22 mag .

It is the same mental argument I have with the 17 cal rimfires.

But my tastes are more inline with reloadable calibers.
The 38/357, it is on the long term wish list in a lever gun,I have dies and components for that.

I have a Winchester 9422 XTR in 22 mag and I'm not getting rid of it but if I was thinking about getting a 22 mag now i'd just get a 357 and use 357 for anything I'd use 22 mag for.

All through the 'panic', .22 Mag has been available for around $12-$15/50rds depending on brand...

Not a lever, but my Chuckster isn't a 'plinker', it is a varmint gun...

I sold all but 2 of my rimfire guns during the banic to fund a casting setup, 357 revolver, and a 357 rifle, keeping the remainder only for sentimental reasons. These day's I plink with cast lead 38's, which I load for about $90 per thousand. I have a lot more fun with my current gear than I ever did shooting .22's

Don't rule out a .17hmr instead of the .22mag. Ammo is easily available for about $12 a box (50rds). Have a Henry .17hmr and it is a great shooting little gun. amazingly accurate.

Some have to consider the noise issue. Able to reload is another. Then again 22 Mag its not what I would call a plink'in gun for Saturday afternoons due to the ammo's price and scarcity at times. As far as I'm concerned. All rim fire ammunition is way over priced. Although I do own 22 Mag and 22 lr rifles. I seldom shoot either.

As if there was a choice. I only found anything at all in 22 mag at 1 out of 4 stores.

No idea why 22 mag is so difficult to find in retail stores. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I mean, who actually casually shoots 22 mags over 22LR anyway? During the first Obama shortage, 22 mag was one of the few rimfire calibers you could find. Now it seems to be just about the opposite.

I think a lever gun in 22 mag is a great choice. I don't generally buy rifles in handgun calibers although I still wish I'd have picked up the Marlin in 41 mag when they were available. However, I can not see shooting it much, hence I the reason I didn't buy one years back.

The 30 round magazines in .22 mag, is a KelTec pistol, with a trigger like a Walther .22lr target pistol. It is also quite accurate, and has never misfired for any reason!

Again i'm not dissing the guns. I'm dissing the price and lack of availability of ammo.

For that matter you can shoot 223 or 7.62x39 as cheaply as 22 wmr. That's just not right, something's goofy with this picture.

.357 or .38 Special isn't legal for hunting small game everywhere.
"...22 Mag at 1 out of 4 stores..." Demand is relatively low due to the excessive cost. The Mag has always been expensive compared to LR. Had a Savage M65 40 plus years ago. Cost more than twice what LR's ran.

No argument there, but in recent years quite a lot has been goofy with ammunition cost and availability

Hmm I buy .22 mag for $10-$12 a box at Walmart, thats quite a bit cheaper than any .38 special I've seen. If using the rifle for varmints was a possibility I'd probably prefer the .22 mag also.
