James:
When people asked me why I carried a pistol in the woods my replay was it was to shoot myself with in case a bear attacked me.
I would have no qualms about shooting a black bear (actually advised if they are aggressive as they are scavengers and that lovely pink meat in the white wrapper qualifies).
In reality it was a tool, noise to scare one off, climb a tree (hopefully if there was time) and proceed to put lots of rounds in one if it would not leave.
Better off playing dead with a brown bear than shoot it (at least US)
as for the old Rugar SA, I forget what years but I had one with the transfer bar (second generation about 1973 I think).
I did not like it as you had to be very sure to keep pulling back on the trigger or the transfer bar would not stay up to let the hammer hit the firing pin.
I sold it and worked my way to a 41 magnum eventually (S&W). I liked the drop in force and its performance equaled a 44 magnum (hand loads you could surpass it). As its a true 41 caliber its not that far from a 44 and it has a bit better penetration.
