"Why the NRA Gets Its Way"

The 2nd protects the 1st, 3rd, 4th....

Really? I've not been impressed with the job it's been doing lately. When the voters vote the 2nd over all else, the 2nd can actually end up doing significant harm to the rest.

Interesting thought. But one should recognize that the Second Amendment has in it the power to reestablish all the rest in the most dire of circumstances. If you have First Amendment rights in Stalin's Russia, nothing protects them, and when they fall, you have nothing to reestablish them with. But if you have Second Amendment rights, then you may reestablish the first by force if necessary.

I don't think our society is at that point. But my end point is that the ultimate protection of our rights must by its nature depend, not on the goodwill of our rulers or our neighbors, but on force. I think that's why the Second Amendment is in place. (I recognize not all agree, but many who would agree with me historically aren't here to speak, being victims of their neighbors, or lack of their neighbor's concern).

We cannot let that which our ultimate freedom rests slip away while preserving our other freedoms. Without the necessary condition of gun rights, our other freedoms are in an unstable equilibrium, from which a small perturbation will end them, I feel, with no recourse.

That said, I don't think there is a choice to vote for 2A or vote for other freedoms. I think by and large, it's getting to the point where there are democrats you can vote for who are pro-2A, and republicans you can vote for who are pro-2A. (Also examples of both parties who are anti). I think through competeing the two we can win all rights.

Not when the most hard core of the ultra rights have argued away all their allies and are the only ones left with guns because those folk don't always care about freedom of speech (because it's offensive/indecent) or freedom of religion (unless it's jesus) or right to trail (sinners are always guilty) or a host of other freedoms not listed in the Constitution.

Just because the second amendment has the power to reestablish all those other rights doesn't mean that those with guns will actually want to do so.

One of the problems is the polarization and refusal to compromise on other issues.
