why no "ak47s" at big box stores?

PostaPhobia, that's why

Because no Wal-Mart manager want's someone buying an AK and 1 box of ammo, then going Postal in their store. The apparent weapon of choice by 'going postal' employees :D :D

Our local Wal-mart has a limited selection of what they are allowed to stock but they do have a special order catalog that you can get just about anything you are looking for or so I was told by the dept manager you just have to prepay for it

Good point, you can special order just about anything. That's the point - you pay up front on a sale guaranteed to go through, and have expressed the commitment.

Unlike the other guns in the rack, which are there on speculation - highly researched and measured. They'll sell, too. But with every square inch of space dedicated to making a profit and having turnover, it's obvious that the AK doesn't have the draw some think it should.

If it did, then it would be on the shelf making money. Political correctness won't really keep it off the shelf, check the contraceptives aisle, or the books and magazine rack.

As for "Walmart won't sell terrorist weapons," I guess that's the informed view of one of their typical customers.

At the local Dunhams Sporting Goods which basically is like a Dicks has a bunch of AK47's AR15, Thompsons, Mosin Nagants and what not. That is one of the few that actually i have seen sell them though. They probably aren't cause of the government labeling them as weapons for criminals

Wal-Mart has no morals if it will make a profit they will sell it
The only morality in a free markets profit and loss, greed and fear. If you don't like Walt-Mart's business practices then blame the customers. If the majority of customers demand the cheapest products then that is what they will deliver. If people want cheap pet food full of fillers and ofal then that is what they will sell. If you want high quality pet food and are willing to pay for it then that is available too. (Solid Gold Indigo Moon for my kitties.)The information to make those choices is widely available.

Wally sells to the masses. Not all that big a demand for AK-47's.
Also factor in that Wal-Mart is not setup to do warranty returns and other servicing for guns efficiently, thus they are only going to sell the most mainstream brands with established warranties.

Good point. Profit margins at the big-box stores tend to be razor-thin, so if there's a chance that the transaction will involve anything more than taking your money and handing you the product, it's not generally worth their time. They certainly can't afford to spend any amount of time on post-sale complications.

When staying at a Fayetteville AR hotel several years ago on business, we were told something interesting, though it might have little to do with their choice of guns to sell.

After the 9/11 mass murders took place, WalMart decided to force all of its suppliers ( both foreign and domestic) to have an office in the Fayetteville area.

I don't think it has to do with demand (or lack thereof), but rather with supply. From how many makers are AK's readily available on the US market? One could probably count all of the major players on one hand. It could be that none of these makers want to get into bed with Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart is notorious for keeping its suppliers on a short leash, RFID tracking of goods from the factory to the consumer, demanding thinner and thinner profit margins from makers, etc. Basically... to have your goods sold at Wal-Mart, you give Wal-Mart the right to control your prices and profit margins. The relatively few AK importers/manufacturers may simply not want get involved with Wal-Mart.

I remember when Walmart here in central MO. was selling AKs in the late 80's for 199.00 they had a bunch of them.I also remember when Walmart sold handguns, that's where my first 22 revolver was purchased in 1977 a H&R 999 Sportsman.
