Anyone who reloads pistol ammo should be using inexpensive GI ammo cans. I had a 50cal can FILLED w/ .45ACP and just about emptied it after three days of shooting.
I'm not comfortable with loose ammo in an ammo can. Not sure what happens if I drop it or it falls off of "Ammo Can Mountain". I do keep my smaller boxes IN ammo cans however.
Extensive field testing (one range trip) has revealed a flaw with using .45ACP boxes for .40S&W ammo.

Looks fine. Without bullets the cases even sit nice and square. Close the lid and invert the box. Repeat for good measure and Voila!

From what I can tell, loaded ammo doesn't seem to migrate around like this but that may vary as well.
