Why is there no .22 Magnum ammo to be found?

By the time you add shipping, the "cheapest" goes up to 31 cents a round.
I buy .22 WMR by the brick (500 rounds).

The last one cost me $73, which is $7.30 / box (50) or 14.6¢ / round.

Quantity (when available) is your friend.

Then buy a case of 5000 or more once every few years and save even more. Around here, 22 WMR and 17 HMR were always available where other cartridges were not.

My local GS always has 22 mag on hand 50 count for $14/$15
per box. Call your locals up and see if you can get , in bulk Hornady and CCI
makes good 22 mag.

Just checked my ammo. I bought 10 boxes of Armscor 22 mag 45 gr. HP for
$10.99/box andr that amount. I had asked my GS to call me when it came in and asked them to put it asie for me. The first time I did this I offered to give him a $$ advance, but he said no need just give me your number.

I bought a few speed loaders and some gun cleaning stuff and about 5 weeks later got a call that my ammo came in.

Moral of this is cultivate your local GS and make them your friend.

.22 rimfire ammunition has been undergoing a self-sustaining shortage for several years now. The underlying causes are disputed, but IMHO the main cause is hoarding. Another major contributing factor has been strong sales of more-profitable centerfire ammunition, which has prompted manufacturers to prioritize centerfire production over rimfire production.

I doubt that they shut down the rimfire loading line to load centerfire ammo. The manufacturing equipment for rimfire is not easily converted to centerfire.

Whether you call it hoarding, or you call it stockpiling, the end result is the same. No ammo on the shelves. A viscous circle then begins as people buy up all they can because there is a shortage and there is a shortage because people buy up all they can.
I have seen it before, and with commodities other than ammo.

Because Preppers think .22lr and .22 magnum will become the only valuable currency in the apocalypse which, according to my prepper calendar, will be happening on January 3, 2016 at high noon.

Unique ammo, like 22wmr, is typically made in one production run a year and when it is sold out, it isn't available for a while. With the recent panics and ammo hoarding going on, production schedules are having a hard enough time keeping up with the really popular stuff. Simple supply/ production versus demand
