Why is the Python considered to be top of the line in revolvers?

they tested a Smith (not sure which model) a Python, and a gp100 with the hottest hand loaded .357 rounds they could produce.

The Python was the first gun to blow up on them. The barrel could not handle the loads. The Smith blew up next, and they never could get the gp100 to fail.

Seems like I remember an article on this

I also call BS on this one.

Until S&W came out with the 686, the Python barrel was the most massive, strongest barrel on any revolver.

In any case, when a revolver blows, it isn't the barrel, it's the cylinder.

Barrels rarely fail, and when they do, it's usually cracks in the forcing cone.
Barrel's don't "blow".

In over 30 years as a pro, I saw blown cylinders, a few also blown frames, and ONE S&W that was just blown apart, barrel also, from a massive overload of what turned out to be a case full of Bullseye.

Barrels usually don't let go unless there is an obstruction. I guess they really didn't try to hard to blow up the GP-100. There is nothing magical about it. Run the pressures up and it will let go just like any other revolver.
Let's see now, what's all those threads about things heard in a gunshop?

The story he is talking about is a little out of context. The cylinder was what blew, not the bbl.

To be certain, we can all throw in say $50-$75 each until we get enough $'s and one of us can run a test. I'll say they blow in the order as stated too. Colt, S&W and Ruger might not even blow. We can put an end to whether or not it's folklore right here and now.

I'm sure my local range will allow us to blow a few up for the hell of it. Who's game? Anyone want to donate a gun to destroy?

Used GP100-$300
Used Python-$650
Used S&W-$450

We need $1,400 and I'll throw in the ammo and my time + the same $'s everyone is willing to agree on. We will see who makes a piece of crap gun for sure... Any takers feel free to email. Last time I made this offer NO ONE was willing to get on board. Put your money where your mouth is.

Am I hearing a little, I can't afford it, so it must be garbage. So I'm going to have a little snit, bash the Python and push my Ruger or SW. Hey, I waited 70 years for my first Python, and I don't care if it blows up in my hand. From this point on I can always say, 'I OWN A COLT PYTHON' :D :D

nwobhm, your "test" makes NO sense. If they can all withstand the pressure loads of modern ammo, and they all can, why push it to see which one blows first with OUT OF SPEC pressures? What if the S&W has a flaw that was undectected and blows, is it worse then ALL Colt's or Rugers? Of course not. Thats like flooring the engine on a Ferrari, Lamborghini and chevy truck. If the high performance engine blows is the chevy truck the best? No, because running that way is not what it was designed for, just like the Python, and most other guns, are not designed to withstand outrageous overpressure. Like Bullrock said, what you can't have, or aren't willing to pay for, you have to knock to feel better about not owning it, sorry, its BS.

I can only say that me and my gp100 ruger outshot the **** out of a guy who had been shooting all his life and he was 44 years old, im now 46 and still haven't found a better revolver and by the way the other guy was shooting a python that he had been shooting for years ,i was shooting my ruger that i had bought about 2 months before.

zzirg,

Hot damn, you convinced us all!! Rugers are the best gun ever made, bar none, because YOU outshot someone using another gun, what other evidence do we need?? Thanks you so much, and give my regards to Granny and Jethro. :D

Stupid is as stupid is as stupid does.....

I have both a nice (I think less than a 100 rounds) older python (late 70's) and a mid 60's m19 SW. I think the SW trigger is a bit nicer, but it also has tons of rounds through it.

They are both nice. Guns are guns are guns. Some are excellent, some aren't ;)

Python Guy,

My father was a GM worker for 30 years. Um... Chevy does a full throttle test at the factory on EVERY engine... ahem...

what you can't have, or aren't willing to pay for,

Can't pay for... maybe you should read my first post. Had 3 and sold them because they sucked. I haven't made this argument personal and I don't care to go there but if we are going to start I'll go with:

You are an elitest bitch that only buys high priced merchandise to impress your so called bitch friends just because mommy didn't give you the nipple when your woo woo got lost.

But I won't aim that directly at you unless you wanted to make things personal because I feel that it would be unethical and bad manners in mixed company. :D

If full throttle test are run on "EVERY" engine then why do crate motors have clean exhaust ports and valves?

Also speaking of bad manners maybe you should watch your language as minors and women are members here. ;)

It's when they are put in the cars and reach their final inspection on the assembly line.

Bitch Defined:

an unpleasant difficulty; "this problem is a real bitch"

a woman who is thoroughly disliked; "she said her son thought Hilary was a bitch"

informal terms for objecting; "I have a gripe about the service here"

say mean things

female of any member of the dog family

I am sorry if I offended you. Not my intent. :D

Well then I guess "EVERY" engine doesn't really mean every engine. Why would you test just the installed engines when the crate motors must meet the same expectations?

I asked my Dad on that one, his explanation was that may be the case because the assembly line didn't use gasoline. Doesn't know what but some kind of gas(not a liquid, but a gas) and that may explain what your referring to. As to the crate engine, may explain it there too, but he didn't know since he didn't work in the engine plant. If it's that important for you to find out for sure why not exit the "gun" forum and give GM a call and ask them directly.

No one is ready to put $ where there mouth is in a strength test on the S&W, Colt, Ruger makes? Can't believe no one actually wants to know who is tops in strength. Never know we may be surprised.
